Hi all - Confused midwife here!

Hi everyone,

Just thought Id quickly introduce myself after doing a fair bit of lurking. Im a midwife of 7 years and have been looking into actually going for this dream finally but so confused over the best options for us. Some more lurking about and Im sure we will work out the way forwards! My husband is an engineer, not sure but I think a skills assessment could prove difficult for him though. We have 3 kids and want to be there ASAP (probably like everyone else that makes the decision to get on an do it!).

We have some friends in Perth who are giving us bits of advice and others in different states but this forum looks great!

Any help/advice or hellos would be welcome

hi Beck,

Welcome to PP. fellow mw here :-)

there are a couple of ways you can do it: employer sponsored (457) visa which will be the quickest route but it's a temporary four year visa which won't allow you free schooling/medical care/etc. and an independent (189) or state sponsored (190) they are more costly and you will need skills assessment for the main applicant as well as probably an IELTS (depending on points) however you have the permanency and entitlements of residents. it seems there are plenty of midwifery jobs around and new hospitals being built (Fiona Stanley for example) so securing work shoud be ok I think.

have a good look at the immigration website for an idea of the visas and costings.http://www.immi.gov.au/Pages/Welcome.

also a member on here straighttothepoint will let you look at a fab spreadsheet he has giving you a good idea of the cost of living- just personal message him -having said that we've not heard much from him lately.......

just ask away as there's always someone who knows the answer, we did it without an agent- I just tapped into the wealth of knowledge on here :-)

Hi Bean - thanks for the reply!

Yes I think I wouldve been happy with a 457 and apply for PR within the 4 years but with 3 kids requiring schooling, Im not sure its much of an option now - unless I got a job, went quickly and managed to secure PR quickly! And 2 visas within a short space is a whole lot of expense?

Im thinking that a PR from here is probably more secure, but patience isnt a good quality of mine (which I know doesnt bode well for visa application purposes!). I have the IELTS booked for the end of April and am collecting information for ANMAC and AHPRA in the meantime, is this a good idea?

I do see interesting jobs advertised which Im so tempted to apply for but without AHPRA its probably pointless and also if they offered a 457 we would have a major dilemma on our hands!!

Am I on the right tracks?

Where are you headed in Perth and which hospitals? I keep seeing adverts for the Fiona Stanley hospital but also ?Joondalup looks popular with midwives too. Personally Id rather a birth centre or community but Im really not fussy!

I see you have 3 kids too, that makes me feel better somehow!

If you are doing anmac assessment and you ask them they will forward all your certified docs on to ahpra which saves a huge headache. we got our visa through oh skills (way cheaper than midwifery!) so I've not yet gone down the ahpra route.....collecting info together too but as we've no definite date set to go yet I am saving paying reg fees there as well as here until I really have to! I've been tempted with a couple of jobs but waiting to see how the job hunt goes for my oh first and patience is not a virtue of mine either, which is weird in our profession! lol xx

were heading off in October to activate the visa and do a reccie, we've never been to aus! will know more after that :-) my friend works in joondalup in both public and private hospital there. I'm currently community midwife here so would consider anything low risk. been qualified since 1999, so a tad longer than you ;-)

Yes just a tad! he he. Im one of those crazy caseloaders and really am happy to do anything, well... apart from private. I cant imagine not 'finishing the job', doing the births, suturing etc. Im a little confused about the order of things, should I do IELTS and ANMAC simultaneously and worry about AHPRA later? Or all three?

I cant get over how complicated the process is, but I suppose it weeds out those who arent serious! A real shame about the 457 visa, Im really ready for a change from the job I have here and I didnt want my eldest starting high school in September ideally. Onwards and upwards anyway :)

Nice to know there is another midwife here, thanks for the info!

I also meant to say that I think with the 457 visa some states on the the skill shortage jobs list will part fund some of the school fees or certainly cap them for each child but you need to be able to work full time too.

These factors for me cancelled out the 457. Your priority needs to be getting booked on IELTS exam, getting your transcript from your uni (mines taking 6 weeks) and contacting the NMC for your registration details (I have contacted them twice so far and no response yet) you also need a reference. You can then send off your ANMAC which you need to ask them to send to ANMAC and then apply for visa and skills select.

I dont know :-( One minute im all for it - the next in running in other direction scared! Although my hubby is driving the ambition I know its me that needs to apply and probably arrange the whole thing due to the long hours he works. Part of me thinks its selfish to not let him try his dream but I have so many reservations and questions!

I have started to do the house up (currently painting the living room on annual leave) and an declutering. I have also started to read for my IELTS and have applied to nmc and for my transcript. We will go down the route of 189/190...... If I ever make the final decision!

I can completely understand the feelings you are having, my situation is almost identical. I desperately wanted to stay for my career really but after coming to my senses and realising its just not worth it, Ive totally gone the other way and want an adventure and experience for my children. Maybe it wont be forever, Id like to try it for 2 years which is why Im gutted about the 457 meaning school fees :(

My IELTS should be the 26th April, Im hoping I dont have to do too much study as I have an essay due in the week before! What did you apply to the NMC for?

Yes there are a few other negatives about the 457 though too. Best to go for PR if you can. I know its a longer wait but I think worth it for peace of mind.

The NMC have to send documentation to prove that you are on the register/year of entry to register etc. So far they have been less than useful. Meant to respond to requests within 5 days and after 3 weeks..nothing.............Info all avaiable on NMC websire and ANMAC of whats required. Good luck for your IELTS.

Hi, as may have been said, you need to do ielts first, as ANMAC require it for their assessment. And also, make sure you sign up for the 'academic' ielts, and not the 'general', as ANMAC require a score of 7 in all components on the academic test.

Good luck!

Thanks Tracey, that was exactly one of the questions I asked someone I know (a nurse) who just went through the whole process! Good job I asked, Id have totally booked the general one as its described for immigration!

Anyone know how many references I need for ANMAC? Looks like one but thought I read 2 somewhere. I think knowing where I work and the length of time it takes to get anything, I ought to ask for these soon!

Oh... and one more question... I am a SoM here, does that count for anything in Oz or on my applications, would they even understand the role?!
