ok which bank do you recommend?

ideally I don't want to be charged for just having a bank account

I would like easy access to my money ie atm's around duncraig, carine and Hillary's as well as freo trips

I may need to transfer money HSBC uk to this account but rarely and not much money

I used NAB, opened the account in the uk, they gave me a contact at Moneycorp to transfer our uk cash without charge to the account. Jess (who deals with all migrant banking) was great when we went to see her yesterday. Cards were ready, pin codes ready, started using account straight away. NAB charge a flat fee of $22 for cash transfers back to a UK account, but no charge for transfers from the uk via Moneycorp into your account.

We used NAB initially and they were good to start with. They screwed us over though so we are moving to someone else.

Charges aren't such an issue as long as you're putting a certian amount in per month, this is normally covered by your salary.

Most of the big banks ANZ, Commonwealth, Bankwest, NAB have ATMs all over the place so it's not sucha big issue. And Woolies do cashback too.

I used anz, they were great. Opened an account in the uk online. They telephoned me to ask when I was coming out etc and gave me my online banking details. When I came out I attended the branch to get my canard! Bring your boarding passes to the bank because they need those if your passport wasn't stamped - mine wasn't and it's common apparently!

Great, so far our experience with ANZ has been really good but that's only from the London office.

Banks are really the same here as in most other countries and certainly no different than in the UK. All 'high street' banks in Oz must be competitive to survive and it would be foolish to think that they are not aware of each other's account facilities and charges. If a visiting Australian to the UK was to ask which UK bank is best I'm sure we would probably all have horror stories to tell at some point and it's no different here. Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, BankWest etc all appear to have a good presence in most suburbs so it could almost be a case of pinning the tail on a donkey and hoping for the best!! Good luck.
