verystormy
Well, as in the chinese curse "may your life be interesting" It is very early morning here in Tanzania and woke up to the news that my company are moving the office to Adelaide. At the moment all i know is that normally i report directly to the GM and also to the board as required. The GM has not been asked to go with them and the board will all be Adelaide based. Staff in Perth are being called in one by one for a chat. But i am stuck here in the African bush and no one is telling me anything So, i may find myself on a plane in a few hours time. Damned frustrating not knowing whats going on.
portlaunay
Hope it works out favourably. What's your best case scenario?
verystormy
Well although i am looking to leave / change career, i cant afford to be out of work yet, so i need to be left here doing my job. Particularly as we retrenched my opposite number a couple of weeks ago and they have announced they are not paying him redundancy because working in Africa means he cant claim protection under Australian law! If i am pushed out, then will just need to get something / anything quick - Woolworths shelf stacking or anything. Because we are in that hard bit of building the house and so paying a mortgage but also paying rent, we ceetainly cant live off benefits! verystormy
Spoke to the new MD - appointed today My job is safe until June. No one is sure after than, but i already knew that as the project is in a joint venture with another company and they are picking up the costs. They have a walk out clause in June and will decide then to stay or go. If they go, then i will be on a plane with them. But at least i have till then and wasnt asked to jump on a plane today. The rest of the office has been decimated. All admin gone, my boss gone, geology support people gone, company sec been told he can relocate but at own expense, likewise the senior project engineer and the chief financial officer. But, at least i have 3 more pay packets!

nicolac34
Good luck VS! I'm in the same boat, will find out in June whether or not I still have a job. It's not looking likely though - it's the uncertainty that's the worst!
verystormy
Good luck VS! I'm in the same boat, will find out in June whether or not I still have a job. It's not looking likely though - it's the uncertainty that's the worst! I know what you mean. I am just going to assume the worst and do what i can to find something else. Almost certainly in a different career as my area is dead and one of the most respected experts on how the industry is going doesnt expect it to get better for at least 2 years. So, time to do something new!

Rossmoyne
Sometimes when things go totally pearshaped and not what you want, a new challenge comes along and it turns out even better than you imagined. Happened a few times for me so I now embrace every change with an open mind and just go with the flow. Hope it works for you Stormy.... and you too Nicolac.... verystormy
Yep Ross, totally agree. Things can seem bad at a time, but it is often that bad bit that is the stepping stone to something really good. Had that happen a lot in my life. I had always fancied being my own boss and having a little business and this will just force me to get my act together to act on them dreams
odies
the only thing I would say VS is careful with your own business what you buy , we put our money in this post office and built it up with news, sweets, cards etc. Not thinking that post offices would go the way they have in the uk. We are having a real struggle to sell
