UK primary school teachers working in Oz

Hi all,

I have a question for those who have experience in working both in UK and Oz as a primary school teacher.

I have been reading on Level 3 classroom teacher applications and senior teachers, and I'd like to get a real insite on how it would work for someone coming from the UK to work in Oz.

The situation is: primary school teacher with 15 years experience, outsanding teacher, working in school management for the past 8 years, 5 of those as a Deputy Head Teacher, but also keeping some involvement in classroom. Wouldn't mind to move over to Australia and work as a classroom teacher.

I read you need to be employed by the Dept of Education for you to apply for Level 3 classroom teacher, and I appreciate the complexity of portfolio, etc...

My question is: can a experienced teacher from UK apply for a Level 3 classroom teacher once employed in Oz? Is the UK experience accpted for the portfolio? I know it won't be something that you'd do in your first week there, but I'm wondering if you'd have to work another 15 years in Oz to get there again?

Also, I have never seen jobs advertized for level 3 classroon teachers... so how they come about?

Also, what is the difference between level 3 classroom teacher and senior teacher? How do you progress from one to another?

I'm just trying to get my head around on career progression and keep our expectations realistic.

Thanks a lot for your insight. :wubclub:

PS: Primary school teacher with Oz only experience are also wellcome to comment. :smile2:

Hello,

I am a primary school teacher, I moved to Perth at the end of June. I have applied for every job within an hours commute. I haven't had any interviews. I am finding it really tough so I am going to try supply teaching next year and hope to get my foot in the door that way. I have been teaching for ten years, also an outstanding teacher and awarded Lead Teacher Status. I have also been on the management team for the past 6 years. I'm currently working in a childcare centre - the money is shocking and and I feel like I have taken a massive step backwards. I have had feedback on a few of my applications. I have been told that my cv is good but I don't have Oz experience which is part of the selection criteria. One person said that my international experience was detrimental to my application. Also the amount of candidates per job is high - between 200 and 300 applications.

I have got to know a few primary teachers here and they have all told me to investigate the supply teaching route as that's how people are taken on these days.

I wish you the very best of luck - sorry I can't help with the Level 3 teacher questions, someone here should though!

hi, I too am a primary teacher. Been here since sept but have been lucky enough to secure a job next year. I too applied for everything and it's so disheartening getting rejected constantly! I also found it hard to Taylor every letter to suit as there were so many plus I never thought I stood a chance anyway!

I did some relief this term on days I had childcare. It wasn't in the best school so some days it was really tough; however, the money was great and really I was guaranteed work. Schools are looking for people they can rely on. If you can get into a few schools and long service leave or a maternity comes up your chances will be really good!

Good luck

Hi, I'm a primary teacher. Also lucky enough to get a permanent job for next year. There are jobs out there. Def do supply as once they know you and know how good a teacher you are you will be inundated with supply. Once in any jobs that come up they will think of you first. Also def get into the general pool for teaching and apply to get into individual school pools too. I got Into two schools pools and was asked if I wanted a job there too. As for the level three I'm looking into to that too. Will know more next year when I have to send a portfolio to the TRBWA for registered teacher

Thanks for the replies, it's good to know that you can get a job! Congrats to you both. Will def go down the supply route after that feedback, keep applying and keep my chin up! I've found the application process so long, each cover letter takes me a few hours! Yes, changing it each time to suit the school takes forever!! But I will plod on. Thank you so much, I really appreciate you sharing your experiences.

I too had real trouble even getting shortlisted for jobs despite 15 years successful experience. Keep trying, contact principles directly and ask for further information. Tailor your application to suit the schools business plan and NAPLAN data and you'll have ,ore success.

I've now secured the most unbelievable job in Perth but it took longer than expected.

Let me know if you'd like any help
