SunshineBee
After having our visa granted end of Oct, me and the hubby are finally here! I have been a little bit of a poster, but mostly a reader of all the info posted, but I thank everyone who bothered to reply to my questions. I wanted to share my experience so far very briefly, just because I read this forum religiously and scared myself witless daily about things because of all the comments on here, so I am hoping that I can help some other people out who may be en route and worried about the things I was, because so far no need to panic at all! It turns out after 3 days we have found our absolute dream home and we have a dog! No horrible competition that you hear about, no horrible estate agents, no wait, submitted our application today and got a decision today. We are right on South Beach in Fremantle, overlooking poo beach (dog beach) and I can't quite believe how easy it was. All the things I read said to prepare all this paperwork and photos and when I tried to offer them up the estate agent thought I was insane. I quote "erm.....I don't think we need that stuff, us Ozzie's are pretty relaxed....." It seems a bit unreal tbh and I'm waiting for it to go A over T, just can't wait to get in so I have squatters rights and they can't change their minds....Eek! I had a 2nd interview for a job the morning after we arrived and although I didn't get that one, I have a couple more next week. Everyone said things were slow and no interviews etc, but I am confident that this will happen for us over the next couple of months. It is true that you get out what you put in and you have to be super pushy to get the interviews. Reading PP's gave me a lot of info and confidence in this area, and once you are here with an Aussie mobile number, everything is SO much easier, so don't panic if you are applying and hear NOTHINGm when in the UK...it will get better once you're here, just bring at least 3 months worth of money to survive to your standard. People are mostly lovely (although they will never be Welsh, so much friendlier than that there Manchester), prices are sky high (as you must know before you come out, but you'll get used to that), but life for now is sweet!:smile2: Please no negative comments to burst my bubble, I'm only 3 days in and I'm planning for the honeymoon to last at least 6 months. I'm hoping Portlauney will be able to help with some advice on fishmonger though? Went to Freo market today which was great for certain things, and I know a butcher in Freo has been mentioned before. but please could you remind me of a decent butcher and fishmonger in Freo? I feel a bit like this post is quite smug, but I just want to let people still in the UK on their way over that it is not as scary as everyone makes out. Probably easy for me to say with no kids and I didn't have a house to sell, so hats off to those who do, but it's worth all the stress and hard work I'm pretty damn sure already! dxboz
Welcome to Freo! Sealanes down the road on Marine Terrace is great for fish - not cheap though Edited April 4, 2014 by dxboz
dxboz
There is also a really good butcher and cheap veggie shop on Wray Avenue
dxboz
South Freo market on Lefroy Road is also on every Sunday morning - great place for brekkie! The one tomorrow is a bigger one than usual. Great place to spend a few hours. I have sent you a PM Edited April 5, 2014 by dxboz
portlaunay
Listen to dxboz and head up Lefroy tomorrow morning. We'll be there for an early brekkie before we head to the opening of the EYP at the Esplanade. We're in Freo this morning actually so if you want to hook up we'd be happy to give the low-down on all the best places. If you continue past the farmers market on Lefroy and keep going east you'll get to a small roundabout with some shops just close by. If you go into the IGA you'll find the Princi's butchers inside and they're just about the best butcher you'll find. Depending on who serves you they can be a bit surly at first but it's just their way, they're incredibly friendly. The tall Ozzie guy is from Byron and he really knows his stuff. Ask him what's good and he'll see you right. Next door is Princi's the deli, great for Italian delights. The fishmongers is a little harder to explain but it's in O'Connor, on Carrington and the people who run it are lovely. The place to get your veggies is Albert and Grace's at Sth Freo farmers market or Freo markets on a Sunday afternoon when they're virtually giving it away. Galatti's on Wray is good too but their stuff is pretty end of the line so unless you're using it that day there are better places around. Where you're situated you'll have Run Amuk hotdogs behind, run by some very good friends of ours. I recommend the Punk! I have to say your experiences, the smooth process with regards to your rental is a Freo thing. This is a unique part of WA with far fewer expats, plenty of old hippies and a community who are very passionate about their little town. Enjoy, Freo is an amazing place, we love it. It's looking like a beautiful day today so get out there.

SunshineBee
Hi Bee, When you first arrived did you have a holiday rental already booked? Where did you book it and all that stuff? Thanks Keith Hi Keith, yes we booked a months holiday let in advance. We are staying in a little place in Beaconsfield that we found on Stayz, and Janey who looks after our place has a couple more places in Freo. If you look on the Stayz website you'll find something suitable I'm sure. Good luck! Sam

Sam Sam, What sort of price range was the holiday let for a month, I was looking at that stayz website last night and there didn't seem to be many. I was putting dates in for early next year when hopefully all our visa/medicals etc will be completed by and we have finalised things in the UK. Thanks Keith
