Peata Whyted
Hi everyone, We have been travelling the various suburbs north and South over the last week and found the roads and distances between the burbs and my office in Burswood to be fine, however, quite a few people have advised that getting to Burswood from the likes of tapping etc will be a nightmare. So, we look south, the likes of success and Hammond park and likewise, people say it's a nightmare on the kwinanan at peak times. We looked at San Remo this morning and love the place. Can anyone give me an average commute time to Burswood at about 7am from just north of Mandurah? Sat nav says 70km and 55mins, but that does not take into account traffic. I can get the train which takes 1hr20 to Burswood from Mandurah. Any advice welcomed Pete.
fifi69
Are you talking renting or buying? What budget? i can think of many suburbs that could be suitable for you, where you miss out a lot of the kwinnana freeway. but what are you actually looking for? ali
If you're here at the moment - why not try the journey this week before the school holidays start on Friday
jamesw
If you are leaving Mandurah at 7:00, then there is a train that leaves at 7:03, change in Perth and you arrive at Burswood at 8:12 Total travel 1:09, which at that time in the morning would be quicker than driving up the freeway
verystormy
I go with James. When working in Perth i always get the train from Mandurah. Just buy a paper from the shop there, sit back and relax
Peata Whyted
Agreed everyone, thanks for your replies. I checked out transperth and saw the same train James, it figures to take that over driving. We are booked in to the home inspection on Thurs, but will view one in Success on Wed eve so will see which suits best. I will keep you all posted. At that time of the morning the kwinana has stopped from Rowly road, and it will be extremely slow going for the rest of the journey, doesn't matter what route you take it's going to be slow, I would say you need at least an hour from Rowly Road so it is probably a lot easier to take the train, at least from Mandurah you will get a seat as far as perth, sit & read the paper. Listen to the traffic reports on the radio in the morning, the first things that they say is "Kwinana & Mitchell Freeway" and that's not to say they are flowing freely
Peata Whyted
Thanks Druid, I did pen a response for 20 mins but the wifi link I am on timed out, so all my hard work was lost!
elizabethkolo
At least if you take the train from that far south you'll actually get a seat. The next thing to think about is parking. Many stations fill up before 7am. It's worth checking out the station you'll be using just to make sure. If you decided to drive that journey, I would expect it to take at least 90 minutes. Peata Whyted
Thanks elizabethkolo, I thought as much. One of my colleagues does a similar journey but gets on at Wellard. We view the house in the morning, so I suppose that will be a big factor. Good luck with the move back. I used to work in Leeds, and I know where I would rather be! Pete. elizabethkolo
Haha Pete, tell me about it. After so long in Perth I can't handle anything under 20 degrees! Best of luck in the morning, and let us know how it goes! -Elizabeth
verystormy
Parking is an issue, though in Mandurah it is mainly the free one that fills up quick. The pay one often has places and it is only a couple of dollars. I usually park over the road though on the side. They are building a new carpark as well
Bibbs
Use Google Maps. It integrates with the speed measuring devices on all the main roads, so is very accurate and will show if there are any jams, and adjust the timings accordingly. Check an hour before you need to start work, and it'll know what the traffic is like, and give you an idea of how long it'd take. It also has the bus/train timetables incorporated, so you can see the timings of your route too. I recon driving it'd be an hour there most days, maybe a bit more on an afternoon, and maybe double that on a Friday afternoon especially if it's a long weekend. Burswood it's usually quicker to go through Graham Farmer and down, than via the highways.
Peata Whyted
Thanks guys all good advice. The house was pretty poor on close inspection, nothing too dramatic, but it felt worn and in need of a good bit of TLC, so we weren't blown away enough to justify the commute. Ended up putting an application in for a brand new build in Southern River this evening, fingers crossed we get accepted.

Southern River looks nice, but make sure you have a look at the traffic on the main cross roads during commute time. It backs up a fair way. There were plans to open up the rail line to commuter trains. They even had the land for the station bought. But it's one of those, "maybe in 2040" things. Heading out to Midland should be easier than the city. Tonkin, and out.

You will like that area... very up and coming and not the nightmare commute that people will have you believe. You can drive to Thornlie station which will take you through to Burswood on the Armadale line.... And if you decide to drive, there are routes that do not include the major highways .... Hope it works out....
