JasonM
How did you choose where to go in Perth ? if you do not have a job to come out too. (if you do, this will probably solve this issue) I have seen people book a holiday rental and look around, again if you find a job quickly i am guessing that this will solve this. I have a children 2 girls aged 6 and 2 so schools may come into this decision ? I get that all areas have good and bad things about them and again cost of property / rentals. If all goes well i want to try to get the family settled as quickly as possible. What made you pick the area that you have settled in ? is there anything that you would do different ? or the same ? portlaunay
Last question first, I wouldn't change a single thing. Mrs p was sponsored by a company close to Fremantle but we'd never been to Australia so didn't have a clue where to stay. Long story short, once she'd been to Freo there was no way we were going to live anywhere else. Sorry, there's no great reasoning or philosophy, when you know, you know. You know? odies
Son and family live North because wifes family live North so we hopefully will be North. Would maybe like a dearer suburb but happy to be near grandchildren within 10 mins.
fifi69
What work will you be doing? this could more than help you deciding an area... ie will your work likely to be CBD based? Then a suburb on a train line would be beneficial. manufacturing, engineering etc, SoR might been less of a commute ... nursing...near the hospital .. anyway I'm sure you get the picture. Or you just find the suburb that wows you....then you work round that. best of luck
jo and scott
id like to be in walking distance from the school / shops. having to drive 20-25 mins to get the girls to school is starting to get on my nerves, sometimes its longer if the weather is bad. i have friends in baldivis so we are looking at around that area, however, we have looked at houses all over perth so who knows where we will end up ! i love looking at real estate.com for houses :-)) neither myself or hubby have never been to australia before. Sideshowdeb
It's a tough one to decide upon from here. I've never been to Perth and when my OH was last in Perth he'd just landed at the start of a WHV and wasn't really interested in family friendly suburbs. I've just google... lots and lots. Fell in love with a few areas that are way out of our price range, but slowly I've whittled it down. We aren't really led to any particular area by our jobs, so we had to narrow it down as much as possible by being 'picky'. We made a list of 'must haves', and 'would likes', choice of schools, distance to the beach, sports clubs, cafés etc. then researched the half dozen areas we had left, really thoroughly. Personally, I'd love Fremantle, but we're not sure we could afford as much space as we want and be as close to the water as we'd like. I love what I've seen of Mandurah too, but it's a long way from Perth, so at the moment, it's looking like Rockingham...? I'm fully expecting this to all go out the window when we start looking around a get a feel for places, like Porty says "when you know, you know". There's a thread on here, where people have talked about their suburb. It's quite old but if you search you should find it. There's lots of info available to help you narrow it down to a manageable number of areas to check out when you get there. It does feel a bit overwhelming at the start, but everyone does it so I have faith it will all come good in the end :smile2:

Wehad the advantage of knowing perth fairly well, and the hills was where we had family and loved visiting Kalamunda on our holidays, so it was a fairly easy option, also the fact that we have everything to hand in the village is a huge bonus as I'm a bit of a pants driver, so this was crucial in our choice, schools, doctors, shops, buses, parks, all very accessible, coupled with a strong sense of community, it was an easy decision for us. The commute by car into the city for my hubby is fairly easy too, the whole journey from door to door taking 35/40 minutes, again a huge bonus... Good luck with your decisions. verystormy
We do not have children, so schools were not part of our thinking. What we did want is a place next to the beach but on a cheaper budget and in a quiter location. We also didnt mind how long the commute would be. So, started looking around Mandurah as loved the look of it and it ticked all the boxes. One day a realestate agent called to say they had a rental available south of Mandurah. That was 6 years ago and still very happy
