Hi, we are just beginning the process of looking at visas etc, I may have secured a job in Perth already. Can anyone tell me the best place to go for visa advice, or the best book to read with regard a step by step process.

Thanks!

Hi Cat, Welcome to Perth Poms, Plenty of people on here to give you great advise based on their experiences,

Look on http://www.immi.gov.au/Pages/Welcome.aspx and select the tabs that are more relative to you after that it'll come to a visa selector match to you're circumstances,

I personally didn't use a Migration Agent and have done the process myself, if you can read and write (ha ha) you will save yourself a fortune, its not hard the process just a little time consuming etc

Good Luck

Steven

Thank you for such a quick reply. I will have a look at that website. It's exciting but does feel overwhelming.

Overwhelming is the reason i used an agent, also run my own business so for me it is easier just being told what to do, and having it checked. Not only that 2k is not alot of money in the grand scheme of what you are going to be spending for your life changing move.

If you have the spare money i think it is worth doing, also if you have any family complications or work for yourself it can be helpful.

Also depends on what visa you are going to go for i guess.

Good luck and well done on having a job in place.

If you have been offered a job, are they offering a sponsored visa?

If not then are they will to keep the job open for an extended period of time - a PR visa is likely to take 12-18 months as a estimate.

The first thing to do is see if you have an occupation on one of the two lists - the SOL and the CSOL. Then next to the occupation will be a number, google this number to find the minimum experience and qualifacations required to pass the skills assessment for that occupation

Yes I'm hoping for as sponsored visa. I wondered if that would be quicker than 12-18 mth. Yes my job is on the skills assessment list. I will be coming with family so hope my husband can get a job when we arrive.

Can anyone recommend a good agent? I think I better talk to someone about this!

Ok, then the visa they will probably arrange is a 457 temporary business sponsored visa. This is fairly quick - though depends on if they have sponsored before and a few other things. In the average case it should not take more than a few months. Does depend as well on if you need medicals - most dont but medical proffessions and teaching does.

You need to be aware though this is a temp visa and while some go on to gain permanent residence, some do not - there is no automatic path from temporary residence to permanent. I would ask the employer if they would consider sponsoring your for PR later down the track.

You also need to be aware that it is tied to the employer - so if you were to lose your job, you only have 90 days to find another company willing and able to sponsor you (not all companies can) or leave the country.

You should also be aware there are mandatory school fees for children here on a 457. These are currently $4k per year for the first child and $2k for subsequant children.

Most companies that sponsor use a migration agent and it is worth asking the company if they are as that will assist you a lot. The process for a 457 though is fairly simple - i originally came on one and did it myself.

The first thing that happens is the comoany will need to get the nomination approved. When it is, you will be contacted to complete your side.

Oh wow, thanks for the info. Yes that's the visa I'm looking at. So I will ask then if they are using a migration agent before I pay for one.

I have a 2 year old so thanks for the info about schools, I didn't realise that.

I think think I will need a medical too. Can I go ahead and arrange that, or do I need to wait for the process to start?

Thanks for your help!

I am not sure on when i arranged the medical - it has to be at an approved centre. It is a while since we did our 457 (6 years). If the company are using a agent they will be able to guide you through the process. Are you a nurse by any chance? If so we have lots of nurses on here who should be able to help.

A 2 year old is fine - you have a couple of years before worrying about schools and you could easily be PR before then.

If they are not using an agent, they probably have experience of the process and there is lots of people on here who have recently gone through the process and a lot of help available if you want to do it yourself.

A psychologist! Well, you are on the right forum. We could keep in you work for the next 30 years lol

Yes, i am very heppy we made the move. We arrived in Oz in 2008 on 457 visas and later became perm residents and then last year citizens.

We are finally building our first home and considering a career change to start our own business. In the UK we lived in a small terrace cottage in Leicester, here we rent a fairlygood sized house with a pool opposite the ocean and are building our dream home

I am away at work at the moment in Africa and cant wait to get back and feel the sand on my toes and feel the ocean breeze, walk the dog on the beach and watch the dolphins play.

I did go through a spell of not wanting to be in Oz, but that is because i felt very unsettled for a lot of reasons and i think many people have at least a homesickness spell. Now though, i am not even keen on going back for a holiday. My wife wanted us to next month as i travel via Dubai and have more than enough airmiles for it to be a free trip. But i have said she can go and i will relex back in Perth

Where will you be working?

That's so funny, I'm from Leicester. Grew up there. I live in the North East now. Do you go back much?

I can imagine it's normal to go though home sickness, but u guess you have to ride it through.

The job is at a local university, I'm hoping to set up privately too. If my visa allows. That's what I do in the UK too.

Only been back to the UK twice and both were for funerals unfortunatly. Funny, i grew up in the north east - middlesbrough and moved to Leicester to study and stayed - we crossed in opposite ways lol. I havent been back to Leicester since we left! Would like to in some ways to catch up with friends, but enjoy my time home more. It is probably because i work away so much that when i am not working, i just want to be home. Home now is WA

You will not be able to work beyond your visa i am afraid. Though you could start the process of a PR visa as soon as your arrive and then have no restrictions on anything.

There is loads of advice on here as you go through the process on things like where to live, budgets, the flight, Perth and WA in general, things to do and see - your little one will love the roos.

Have you started looking yet at things like where to live? Perth is a huge city geographicaly as its very spread out.

Lol I work in Middlesbrough!

Just been looking at temp accommodation at the moment in South Perth. Close to work. I think we will wait until we are there to think about areas.

Thanks for for all your help, I will certainly be on here again once we think about everything else!!

Hi Cat,

We are in a similar position to yourself looking at emigration. My wife is a nurse and is hopeful to secure a job in her profession and we have been daunted by the immigration website. A close friend of mine emigrated on Monday this week after spending several years attempting to move and then went through an Agent who has significantly improved their process. I too have now registered with this Agent and the information so far has been very comforting and promising.

Just interested in how you have secured a job prior to arriving and whether you can offer any advice on this as this is a concern of ours both giving up good jobs here in the UK. It's the uncertainty of employment that is concerning us the most.

Regards

Lee

Hi Lee, I applied for a position that was advertised through my regulating body. I'm sure nursing will have similar. I've been looking for the right position for about 2 years now. They were looking for people from the uk and Europe.

Do you know the name of the advisor your friends used? Be great if you already know people in Perth.

Hi Cat and Lee welcome to pp, a great site with lots of very helpful people keen to give advice and guidance about a multitude of issues. I too am a nurse and secured a job offer from the UK just by applying for one I saw on one of the job seeker websites. Had a telephone interview and employer has now sponsored me for a 186 which we lodged on the 11th March. We haven't used an agent but had a steep learning curve in reading the small print and interpreting every line of information on each potential, visa category! And some very essential info on here esp in my case Re the caution of a 457 (because of my age). Good flipping advice as that's what employer was initially offering and that could have been a fatal mistake for our future!

good luck!

You may find that you're limited only to working for your employer on the 457. Some partners have found difficulty in securing work on the 457 because of it's temporary status (whilst others haven't), some adverts here (e.g. some nursing jobs)may say that preference is given to Australian Citizens and Permanent residents

No you won't be able to set up yourself if you are on a temporary sponsored visa, the 457 that is. If you want to set up by yourself, you might be better getting the skilled migrant visa. Of course you could do both, get the 457 for now and then start the skilled migrant one too.

We used Go Matilda and would recommend them to anyone.... Can't remember how much they charged but it is worth every penny....

we had some really poor advice and the first agent we used (four corners ) went bust.... I contacted Alan Collet at Go Matilda and they sorted it no problem....

This is is a post I started nearly a year ago, we did make the move! We arrived in Perth in September 14, totally love it here. We are on my sponsored 457 but currently applying for PR. Just wanted to thank all of you that gave me information and advice, you're all amazing. it was fantastic to be able to ask questions. Happy to answer any questions I can to those who are thinking about making the move.

I am waiting to get my nursing registration before applying for a 457 visa. What are 457 visas like? I hope to look at PR once we have settled. Is there any advice which you would like to pass on about the 457 visa.

Hi, I think 457 visas get a lot of bad press. But we've had a good experience. The visa was granted in 6 days, no problems. You're very wise gettibg AHPRA sorted before you arrive. They take ages and there seems to be no consistent advice from them, from my experience. I'm still only provisionally registered and although I can work, I still have so many hoops to jump through before full registration, then further hoops before endorsement.

We have a 2 yr old and on a 457 the child are fees are very expensive. Half the price once we get PR. I have found my employer to be very good and no other problems with 457. We did the right thing coming on 457, I know other people have bad experiences. It's all very costly though, but I think it's worth it :-)

Good luck with your application.
