Newly qualified uk nurses? Advice please!!

Hi, if anyone has any knowledge, or can offer some advice then we would be extremely grateful.

This is our situation, here goes....

My hubby is on the wanted list for dry lining/fibrous plasterer and has enough work exp, (6 yrs within the last 5yrs).

The problem is that we spoke to someone from AQF as he would need to gain his AQF3, and they said that in order to meet TRA requirements he would need at least 1 years recent exp within the last 3 yrs. This is a problem as my hubby has been out of drylining for 4 years now due to lack of work so would need to try and find enough work to achieve this which is not easy to do.

The other thing is he has just been offered a plumbing apprenticeship which is a wonderful oppourtunity! But unfortunately due to needing to regain his 1 yrs recent work exp in dry lining this means in order for us to be able to apply for our visas he would need to turn down his plumbing apprenticeship! Arghhh!

The other twist is that i have just been offered a place at uni for nursing, which is also a wonderful oppourtunity and means that we will need to be in the uk for at least 3 more years until i qualify.

After lots of careful consideration and soul searching, we decided that he would need to pack in his apprenticeship and regain his years recent exp, then as soon as i qualify we would go to oz, but after spending time looking at perth poms etc, it seems as though newly qyalified uk nurses find it hard to get work in oz????

Due to this we are thinking that maybe it would be better for me to gain some on the job exp in the uk once i have qualified?

If we are to do this then it seems asthough my hubby would be crazy to turn down his apprenticeship as he also would qualify at the same time as me, but as we have a daughter who is nearly 15 i am very conscious of getting our visas so she will be included on them before she tuns 18. Also my sister and her family are due to emigrate this year so we would love to be with them.

I am aware that we have both been offered great job oppourtunities, but taking all the other isues into consideration any advice would be greatly recieved. :arghh::unsure:

Hi! I have been qualified about 18 months and have just come to Perth to work as an RMN. I was offered a job in Melbourne previously which wouldn't have given me any experience before moving - so it is possible.

However, I would recommend having some uk experience. I don't know about other nurses on here (there's a few!) but I found the transition from student to qualified nurse a bit daunting and having experience in the uk (where I trained and so was familiar with) I think was invaluable and it has made me a much more confident nurse. I still am nervous about starting over here though!

It's all down to personal preference. It also depends on where you want to work. State hospitals usually ask for experience (I'll be with a private one so I'm not 100% on that) but you can also apply to be on a graduate programme here in Perth (much like preceptorship). I'm not sure how it works though!!

Good luck on your course!

I think the first thing to say is that no-one knows what the job market will be like in 3 - 4 years and jobs may be harder or easier to come by. Currently, it would be very difficult (but not impossible) to get on a graduate programme as preference will be given to those who trained in Aus. Going for jobs will be a competitive process and going into an interview being able to talk from experience may be the thing that gets you the job (depending on what it is).

I would agree with Miamai that the transition from student to qualified is a little daunting and being able to do that in a familiar environment - where you are aware of the processes and what is expected is a great idea.

Personally, I would both take the opportunities that are there for you in the UK with a plan for migrating.

Ali, thankyou for your reply and advice. Its a tough decision but i dont think we have an option, and i know your right that on the job exp would be an advantage. I think we are just going to take the chance and hope it all works out in a few years when we qualify. Take care. Linz

Hi Miamai, thankyou for your reply and advice.

Its good to hear that nurses can find work in perth. I will be a RAN when i finish my degree and would deffinately be interested in private hospitals/clinics etc also... I hope you dont mind me asking? but did you find a spnsor or did you go on a different visa? Also was it hard to find work in perth as a nurse?

Take care, and good luck on your new job in perth.

Hi,

I think I was very lucky. I saw jobs advertised on the Hollywood clinics website. I applied, got an interview, got the job and I will be on a 457 visa (I'm on a working holiday at the moment).

I know that Australian hospitals often recruit British and Irish RMN's - I don't know abut general - although there seems to be a fair few around which is a good sign!
