Steely
Hi, First post, as just staring the process. My son is now a naturalized Australian, and has his own house with his partner. We are looking to come out on a Parent visa. As part of our initial investigations trying to get info, we have approached a number of migration agents, and one in particular looks promising, however, I was wondering if anyone already living in Perth has used these themselves, and if so, would you recommend them? Lomax Legal Services http://www.lomaxlegal.com/apply-online.html Any other advice/tips would be appreciated....we are attending Down Under live, next month also. http://www.downunderlive.co.uk/westernaustralia.php Thanks Steely
ali
Never heard of them (but that doesn't mean anything). What I would recommend is that any agent you use is MARA registered https://www.mara.gov.au/ you can search for the agent on this link (also gives you other information to). If they don't have a MARA agent in the company - I wouldn't use them.
odies
hi, what type of parent visa are you thinking ?
verystormy
I could find no evidence on their web site that they are MARA registered. I would use only a MARA registered agent. There are a number that are highly regarded. Go Matilda are one
Steely
Thanks Ali, I did some digging around myself, companies house says only formed this month........appreciate the MARA advice.
Steely
Hi Odies, we think the Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa. If we do things ourselves, hope to get this confirmed at the Down Under event next month.

Guest guest10912
Hi Odies, we think the Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa. If we do things ourselves, hope to get this confirmed at the Down Under event next month. Ummm, I wouldn't bank on it. Those things remote about businesses marketing their services, like removals, banking etc. you might get the odd migration agent there but I don't think they would do more than give you a card. It is a great day for collecting free pens and if you are in luck you can have a nice spot of lunch nearby. Want any real information, then ask away for shared experiences or contact a migration agent for some personal attention. You can probably do this by yourselves you know.. Lou8670
Have you read the booklet on parent migration which has been produced by the Aussie immigration department? It's a really useful starting point... http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/1129.pdf Lou
odies
I am doing the 143 visa at the moment, June is my medicals and hopefully getting a case officer . I have done it all myself , I admit I rang for advice at the beginning and paid £200 for a phone call, I can only say it was the biggest waste of money. There is an ok thread on Poms in Oz regarding the parent visa , it takes forever to read. Honestly go for it yourself, none of the forms are daunting , just take time, I am sure your son will help to. If I or anyone on here can help SHOUT, we will help in every way we can . It is just a long waiting game. Can I ask have you been on the immi.gov.website ? and done their little test ?
Steely
Hi Lou, yes we have read this booklet thanks, as you say very helpful.

Steely
Hi odies, tbh, I think we will go alone, I didnt pay for a phone call, but asked 2 different migration companies what visa they suggest we go for and they both said the parent visa. I haven't looked at the immi.gov site, but will head there now.
Levi
As others said, this can be done by the applicant him/herself. I have just finished reading the parent migration booklet this week. @odies : What little test on the immi website are you talking about? Also, I’m a little bit confused about the visa application charges, could anybody help me out if I post my questions? Thanks!
odies
it is just at the beginning where it says what type of visa is for you and does the balance of children. I may be able to help with the charges.

nicolac34
My parents have just had their 173 granted. Initially went it alone (I helped them through the application process) but enlisted the help of Go Matilda half way through as they needed to change details for my sister who at the time of application was listed as a non migrating dependant but at uni in Oz (she decided to go back to England to study). Didn't want to make any mistakes so was worth the money to make sure all the details were right in the end! Long old process though, took about 20 months start to finish. Great news for you and them....I must admit I am expecting 18-24 months from start to finish......is there anything like a 'journey' map available showing what needs to be done and in what order does anyone know please? odies
Complete the visa form, post off or email I posted by secure air mail so I knew it had arrived . you will eventually get an acknowledgement and a receipt for the first payment, mine took 2 months to come. with this came a checklist with action dates to complete .Form 80 was to be done straight away. The police check 10 months later, april 2013. the medical 12 months later june 2013, the AOS was rather misleading so we did that 9 months later took a month to do , son completing the forms waiting in line at centerlink and then being asked for the $14k to be lodged in an account. Then you wait for the case officer , then pay the second instalment . They reckon 12 to 18 months to get the visa, from the start.

We have the same time scale as you, found the check list useful. Are you going to start your police checks now, as I understand from another poster on PIOs that there is a bit of a delay in a case officer being allocated. Ooh, sounds like we may need to do the AOS soon, as you have already done yours. Do they not request it now? Keep your very useful info coming. Levi
HA HA, did not come out right on writing !!! Levi asked the question , I meant I could possibly help him to understand the charges, I have no money !!!! Here I go @odies : It would be my mom (main applicant) and me (dependent, over 18). We would go for the temporary CPV at first (subclass 173), then the permanent one (subclass 143). Questions: Is there a 1st and 2nd VAC for the temporary visa, and then 1st and 2nd VAC for the permanent visa? In what way was the AoS misleading? Was it AUD14000 in your case? I know about this page http://www.immi.gov.au/Help/Pages/fees-charges/visa.aspx but are the prices in the table the 1st VAC? Where's the amount of the second instalment listed? My sister keeps talking about relatively affordable amounts (10K-14K) but on the fees and charges page I keep seeing bigger sums in the notes area, for example: "19k: The second instalment (payable before grant of visa): 3. Any other applicant: $29 130" - and this is for the temporary contributory parent visa! Thank you!

If you're over 18 then unfortunately it will be difficult to prove you're fully dependant on your mother especially if you're already working and have left full time education.
