jackiemcg
Hi there! This is my 1st post and I'm looking for advice from all you nurses and midwives on here. I'm a registered nurse with almost 14 years experience and looking to move to Perth with my husband and 3 kids (14,10 &9). WA health have offered me sponsorship on a 457 visa, but the healthcare and education costs have us thinking twice over the temporary visa. So my question is, can I apply to ANMAC for a modified skills assessment if I have already got my registration with AHPRA or will I still need a full assessment? Thanks in advance Jackie x
ali
Yes you can apply for the modified assessment if you are already registered with AHPRA. We moved a few years ago and made the decision to go the PR route as that offerred more independence as a family and if we didn't like jobs we could walk away and look for something else. A lot of jobs in health are now being advertised giving preference to Aus Citizens and PR holders too, so if you wanted a change and to apply for another job, you know that if candidates are similar after interview, you're going to be down the pecking order. I have also read comments that some partners have had difficulties getting employment because the visa is temporary (others haven't - but it's something to consider). Takes a little longer - but the security of the PR visa (for me) is priceless.
jackiemcg
Thanks Ali, trying to find ways of getting there which will be the best for my family. Although my age will kinda be going against me soon (nearly 45)
verystormy
Depending on how close 45 is, if you have time to get the PR i would. If not, then yes, the 457 route is going to be the way forward. In which case i would try and negotiate with the employer that they will sponsor PR ASAP. You can get company sponsored PR immediatly while on the 457. Some think you have to wait 2 years, but that is incorrect. If done before the two years it just means a skills assessment is needed. If you are british passport holders, then healthcare is pretty much the same on a 457 as it is on PR. In either case i recomend private health cover as even for citizens some things can be expensive such as dental. It is possible that you could come on a 457 and have PR before the school fees are introduced in January. Or at worst only have to pay for the first term. jackiemcg
Thanks for your reply VS, birthday is next month so would probably need to use Hubby's occupation for the points on PR since he's my toy boy and a few yrs younger, lol. His job is also on the SOL list. I only found out about the school fees since I found this forum. Do you know if they're being charged on a yearly basis or per term? So many questions and so many decisions!
Zebradeb
Usually fees are due at the start of each school term of which there are four· The better schools particularly high schools - expect to pay a premium rental- also look at private education. You may be surprised to discover that it is nom in all in comparison to uk, plus you can get more bang for your buck rental wise as you are not limited by catchment boundaries. Do keep in mind that state schools fees are nominal, you're not talking talking thousands and thousands so don't panic just yet. Get an idea of area, email the local schools, they will tell you the charge. Good luck with it all
verystormy
If you get company sponsored before 50 then you are fine to go through your route. You could also arrive on the 457 and at the same time your husband could lodge a PR application with you as dependant. If he were to start now you would probably avoid the school fees that come in January. The advantage at the moment is that you would at least have a job to start immidiatly and an income. School fees will be charged per term http://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au/pages/StatementDetails.aspx?listName=StatementsBarnett&StatId=7748

As of January 2015 children on a 457 will be charged $4000 per year by the WA government for the first child and $2000 per subsequant child. This is on top of any contribution the parents normally pay
jackiemcg
Thanks for your replies. Think we might go down the 457 route to start with as it'll get us out there and our foot in the door so to speak. hubby will now need to get his finger out and apply for PR! Lol ....here we go, fingers crossed xx

So many questions and so many decisions! If your husbands job is on the SOL and he can pass skills assessment and points test, then why don't you just focus on getting the PR skilled migrant visa first. It is possible you have rushed into finding a job without properly thinking through the long term strategy. Often people think finding a job is the first thing to do, but it isn't necessarily, you might be better slowing that side of things down and lining up your ducks differently. The other option is to proceed with the 457 and apply for the PR visa in the background, but you would still have those extra expenses for the short term and maybe you have not had the best pick of jobs this way either. If it were my choice to make, I'd let this opportunity go and focus on getting the skilled migrant visa first, that way you have PR from the start and a wider choice of employment options and simply less on your plate all at once. jackiemcg
Thanks for your advice. Still thinking of the 457 route, with PR in the background. We're also thinking of contacting friends who've been down the road themselves for their experiences and advice. Also going to get a hold of a MARA agent after the bank holiday for their advice and take on the situation, but will definitely be applying for my nursing registration ASAP. I'll need it regardless of which path we take. We've got lots of family on the ground in Perth and have been over a few times visiting so loadsa folk to keep us right, re cars, housing, schools etc!
