Advice Please!!

Loubel

Recommended Posts

Hi, please can someone help me? I'm a mature student who may have the opportunity for a years work experience in Perth. However I have a husband and two children (11 & 9). I haven't got a clue where to start in seeing if it's even viable for us all to live in Perth for a year. Renting somewhere, job for the husband, schools for the kids etc. Please can someone put me on the right track, as it would be an opportunity of a lifetime!!

Many thanks

I am not sure precisely what your queries are, but I should think a lot will depend on the visa you would be on, do you know that? Is it a placement year, hence a student visa? Or something else?

Hi Loubel,

I vaguely remember a friend of a friend being in a similar position and I don't think their partner was allowed to work full time? She might have been looking to do a post grad course, though so I don't know if that would be treated differently. Probably best to speak to an agent in the first instance. I haven't used one myself but I see lots of recommendations for Go Matilda on here, or if you can't wait immi.gov.au has a 'find the visa' tool where you can pop in your details and it will give you the visa options open to you.

Good luck and hopefully someone will be along shortly with more info.

Hi Rupert,

I will be on a student visa as its a placement year, but not sure what visa my husband and children can get. Do you know how I can find out?

many thanks

OK so they would also be on student visas, they go on your visa as dependents. Your husband would only be able to work for 20 hours a week and you would have to pay school fees and maintain full medical cover. This might be an opportunity of a lifetime, but it will be an expensive one! Unless you are independently wealthy, or your husband can fine an employer sponsor perhaps, I would pass to be honest. What is your husband occupation?

Thanks Rupert, my husband owns a fishing tackle shop. Not looking viable really is it?! Shame.

So it is unlikely that your husband is going to find a sponsorship that will allow him to work full time. So no, unless you are very wealthy, this is akin to financial suicide.
