Perth IT Job Market

Hi guys, I’m after some infoformation / help regarding the IT in market in Perth.

I moved to Melbourne 18 months ago, and have a great lifestyle. However we are edging towards completing our 2 year commitment to work in Victoria.

I’ve got around 13 years experience as a Senior Software Tester (in multiple industries) and a lot of Business Analysis experience. I managed to secure a contract role in Melbourne with two weeks of arriving, and been extended up to current day so I have Australian experience also.

We have been really happy in Melbourne, but it was always our plan to try another state after the 2 years. We have also had a baby in that time, and whilst I think Melbourne offers a fantastic City lifestyle, we are now after more of a beach lifestyle suitable for a young family. Sydney is an option, but with the extortionate property prices I don’t think we’d ever be able to get on the property ladder (within an hour of the coast anyway).

So I’m looking into possibilities in Perth. Can anyone who lives there and has recent experience with the IT Job market give me any advice? I’ve looked at Seek etc. and I appreciate that the is less IT work around, but are there less candidates going for these roles?

I would love to hear peoples real experiences to see whether WA could be a realistic option for us.

Thanks!!

Hi Welshben,

I may be in the minority but I landed an Infrastructure PM role within a month of being in Perth. It's not City based and probably not the flashest or career building role but it's reasonably well paid and a start!

I suppose what I'm trying to say is it depends how picky you want to be. There were some quite useful stats posted on another thread a couple of days ago. IT certainly isn't the slowest job market out there!

I'm a Consultant (have my own company, contracting, mainly Development and DBA stuff).

It's a small pond in Perth, but easier to be a big fish. If you are any good, you'll be fine.

Use Seek, but avoid agencies. Go direct to the companies.

Good luck. Seems like there is plenty of stuff out there (for me at least - I've not really looked at other areas of the industry).
