Alienmigration
I recently read on a moving company website that you are only allowed to bring ONE of the following electrical appliances: computer, radio, toaster etc. Is this true? What sort of items did you declare as NEW (under 12 months old)? I'm assuming I don't need to declare a t-shirt bought 10 months ago etc? Thanks. portlaunay
Never heard that one but you should be able to get clarification from the customs website; http://www.customs.gov.au
ROB T
Wouldn't think Perth Customs are that pedantic??
Nikkis2000
We brought a freezer and a washing machine less than 12 mths old and a brand new unused dyson and didn't declare any of them. It was fine. We also brought TV, kettle, microwave, amp, DVD player, play station, printer.... The list goes on! I don't think you'll have a problem! portlaunay
Actually, thinking about it, Customs would probably be ecstatic about seeing shiny new stuff instead of mud/dust/seed caked goods from oversees. This precious island has been devastated by the introduction of foreign organisms so something arriving in sealed packaging is probably a relatively minor risk. Nikkis2000
Plus if they do find it they get to charge you GST so a winner both ways!! That is obviously the risk you have to be prepared to take if you do ship something new. We were prepared to pay out if we had to - but we didn't have to thankfully! Walkabout
I think (and I am prepared to be corrected!) that you have an allowance that you can bring in before you have to worry about paying GST, I think it is either £1000 or $1000 cant remember which one and I also seem to remember that it was going to be reviewed so it might have changed now (sorry not that helpful!) We declared a new breadmaker, but didnt worry about anything else, our container was thoroughly inspected by customs and they were happy with that. We also bought plenty of electrical things in without it being a problem.
Alienmigration
Thanks everybody! So Nikkis2000, did you declare ANYTHING new?? Walkabout, I also read that you can bring new stuff in up to $1,000! We have 3 computers so that was the main reason I was asking about the "only one rule"! Nikkis2000
Nope! The washing machine and fridge were about 8 mths old and well used (although cleaned & scrubbed!) so we weren't too concerned. The dyson was the only thing brand new but we opened the box, took out all the packaging and the removal men taped the box back up.
