Child car seats

Hi,

We are moving over the first week of July, very excited and stressed at same time :)

Curious, are EU/UK child car seats accepted as viable quality in Oz? Is it worth bringing them if they are not?

Are there any other items like this that are ok here but not there?

Thanks,

David.

No they aren't and if there was an injury in an accident then insurance could be an issue. If you are a motorcyclist the same issue could occur with a bike helmet.

I was looking into this the other day (I don't have kids but I was bored - lol!) and there have been some changes recently. Isofix didn't used to be legal in Australia despite it being advocated as the safest way to secure a car seat - mainly because Holden and Ford didn't fit the fixing points in the cars. They've now changed their minds and isofix is legal, but your car seat has to still have a 'seat belt tether' - which people argue is still ridiculous - but what can you do, this is Australia, they have to be different.

A lot of people do use technically 'illegal' car seats from Europe and the UK because they think they are safer than just using the seat belt fastening of car seats here.

I found it quite an interesting read actually (especially the comments), even if it did demonstrate to me again how behind the times Australia is!

Hi, I have 2 children and we didn't bring our seats with us because we were told they were not legal here however for my 5 year old we have ended up buying an identical seat.

for my 2 year old son in a full chair with 5 point harness we did have to get new because the seat needs to be rear fastened, the seat belt through the back is not acceptable here so if your kids are in these seats then just leave them. However my daughter is 5 and in a booster with back which is not attached to the car, just a seat which uses the adult seat belt. This is the same seat as she had in the uk so if you have these then you can bring them with you

I've been looking at http://www.ors.wa.gov.au/road-safety-topics/road-issues/seat-belts and http://www.kidsafewa.com.au/childcarrestraints.html which are both helpful. The only problem is that car seats bought in UK don't have the Australian/New Zealand Standard for child restraints (AS/NZS 1754:2013)....whether or not that is a problem I don't know!

Hi DavidM,

we are flying at the beginning of July too, it's all getting a bit real now and still so much to do!!!!!

We have decided to leave our car seats here and get new ones out there. My son who is just about 5 will be in a booster and daughter in a 5 point harness as she is 2. We just thought it was to much hassle taking car seats to the airport along with all the luggage and pushchair. It's going to be stressful enough!!!

enjoy your flight,

Cheers Mike

Out of curiosity, if you left your car seats here in the uk how did you get your los to the airport? I hadn't even considered not taking our car seats (my two are 3 and 1 yr) but now I see there isn't much point and am wondering how to get them to the airport here in the uk and then what to do the other side as well.

I'd bring them if I were you. They won't cost you anything to bring and you'll children will be safer until you can buy new in Australia.
