SaffanZimbo
Just a quick note (OK - not so quick!) Well had a lovely gentlemen from Doree Bonner come to do a visit this afternoon and now waiting to receive the email quotation. They are my firm favourites for the move having read lots of reviews on PIO and PP. The main plus factor is that they are very local to our location so the car and motorbike can be delivered to their warehouse in 20 minutes. Plus they have given us a comprehensive answer to all our (many) questions re what to take, what to leave, cleaning, car and motorbike do's and don't etc. They will be quoting for a 40 foot (high) as with car and bike getting the contents in may be a squeeze and as the price is the same as a normal 40 foot I would rather not be stuck on the day with a choice of what to leave as there is no room! They will load into removals vans on the drive and then transport to their High Wycombe warehouse to pack into the container, then install a partition before loading the bike and car. I will be getting 2-3 more quotes but if DB's quote comes in anywhere near the others OH and I have agreed we like their reputation and agents in Perth (Grace). Now deciding on dates for shipping and think it will be mid-September when OH flies and the girls and I will follow end of October once he's found work (fingers crossed!). Hopefully we'll be in a rental by early December but for November the girls and I will stay with friends in Northam and OH with friends in Mandurah (don't want to outlive/over burden our hosts!). Will post quotes as they come in just in case anyone is interested.

SaffanZimbo
Has your husband got anything lined up or does he do something that's in demand? OH has not got anything lined up which is a little worrying. He is a Fitter & Turner (Mechanical/Maintenance) I have budgeted for it taking him 3 months to find work..... Guest Guest6235
Can you stretch to 6 months without work as the experienced people living in and around Perth have said try and cover for at least this amount of time.

Yes, we can stretch to 6 months at a push (have lovely friends who we will stay with until we are earning!)
Laz
Great, I'd be interested in your quotes. I'm currently thinking whether we do the option of getting the car into the container. If it's not a huge saving or is too risky we won't bother. Have you got loads of furniture? We have quite a few sofas (5) which are large. Everything else is pretty standard... Family of 4. Also, I'm guessing you know Northam is a long way from Mandurah...and a hike from Perth too.
SaffanZimbo
Paul from Doree Bonner came and gave us a quote on Friday. A little higher than expected tbh. The quote I got last year from Anglo for a 40" was £6770. 40" High top container £7467 Crate for motorbike £130 Crate for TV £45 Overcase for car £330 (may not be required) Total £7972 We also had a rough estimate of GST and Duty payable for the car and motorbike of $1763.00. Insurance through DB will be 3% and there is a 1% admin fee. A surcharge is also payable if we choose to pay by credit card. We have White & Company coming at 1.30pm today for a 2nd quote and will then line up John Mason for the 3rd... not sure if you get a 4th (Anglo) but will play it by ear. OH really liked DB due to the fact that they have a warehouse in High Wycombe so that the car and bike delivery it not an issue. Both car and bike will go as hazardous goods so no need to drain fuel and oil and disconnect batteries etc (just neeed letter from garage to confirm the battery terminals are isolated). They will pack all goods on site and them transport them to their warehouse for packing into the container which is the only downside (I would prefer they pack straight into the container on our driveway) - but hopefully nothing will go missing between the house and container! Will post the 2nd quote once received.

Also, I'm guessing you know Northam is a long way from Mandurah...and a hike from Perth too. We have 3 sofas and a sofabed and yes, a typical 3 bedroom house. There is no difference in price between a 40" and a 40" hightop container so we have opted for the high top so that we can pack all the good one end and hopefully not have to overcrate the car (an extra £330 for overcrating!). I am hoping to do a serious de clutter between now and September as we have 60+ 60litre plastic bins in the loft and also under bed containers full of linen (i've stocked up!), baby toys, books, dvd's, clothing, toiletries etc..... (yes, I am a little bit of a hoarder!). OH has worked in the manufacturing industry for the past 12 years so we have bins full of "freebies" i.e. toothpaste, mouth wash, shaving foam, deodorants etc... The gentlemen from DB said this would not be a problem luckily as they are obviously not for resale due to the slightly defective packaging/labelling on the containers. Much to my relief! Our friends in Mandurah have insisted the girls and I stay with them and won't hear of us going to Northam for the first few weeks, which is a relief (yes, the distance would be a problem as we will only have 1 car to start off with!). Let's hope OH finds work quickly so we don't outlive our welcome as they are a lovely couple (with no children so very brave to take on our 2!). SaffanZimbo
2nd quote in from White and Company at £5979 - there quote includes bike crate but said they will not need to overcrate the car. A huge difference to the Doree Bonner (£7467 + add-ons) quote and both were for almost the same cubic feet + car + bike... Not sure if DB didn't want the job so quoted high now..... Laz
That is quite a difference but as I've never heard of either of those companies it's hard to know why that would be. We only have the usual Clark & Rose, Pickfords, Crown...but I read on another thread that you can use competitors' quotes to haggle. I'm not sure about that - most people where I am would have companies paying their moving costs so haggling might not be the done thing. Guest Guest6235
We've got our container price knocked down by 2k from original quote by going between different companies so it's worth haggling and questioning the price. Our original quote was way O.T.T. You just want to make sure what they are & what they are not including in the price.
