Women and hair....after eventually having a bath and using soap to wash my hair I felt wonderfully clean and ready for bed at 1am Perth time. I woke today at 1.30pm this afternoon to a horrendous mess on top of my head. Not only was my hair like cardboard but it still felt oily at the roots. Thank heaven I brought some hair bands to pull it up with. Yuk!

As for excitement, well now this is unexpected too, we are actually taking it easy and just trying to approach everything at a relaxed pace. My current observation of Perth is out of the apartment window. The sky is overcast but the quality of light is different to that in the UK. It seems to be clearer and brighter. Don't get me wrong, we are really pleased to be here at long last but I think it is the same as when we have been on holiday before, we accept we have a slow start, get unpacked, get food, no rush and then we go for it when we are sorted. I suppose as we know we have potentially the rest of our life here we are not panicking to see it ASAP.

See, we have the ozzy laid back approach already!

Porty, thanks for the offer. Really strange to think that all those people I have chatted to on the other side of the world are now just a few miles away and in time I will get to meet them!

Sully,

Hello your here and its been quite a nice day today, the sun is shining now.

You will really will have "pinch myself" moments over the next few days, weeks and months but you have worked so hard to get here, so now is the time to enjoy it.

Don't forget to update your location, as you now live in Perth, yipee.

Of course, I forgot about at! Thank you. I remember saying that to Nikki and she hadn't realised either!

Im looking forward to those 'pinch yourself' moments. At the moment I have my son next to me pleading to go in the pool. I keep saying, "All in good time". He thinks I'm being mean but it the approach I am taking in general. Poor thing, he feels ignored.

I bet he feels like he is on holiday and the first thing you want to do is jump in the pool, even before you have unpacked. Its a lovely afternoon for a swim (not for us that have been here a while, its a bit nippy, but fresh off the plane, it must be lovely and warm).

Oh I remember that well Sully - Yep get yours changed!! Hope you're enjoying your first day. Revel in those pinch me moments. I'm still getting them fairly regularly four months in!

Greenhouse sounds lovely. OH and I are staying in town on Fri night so we may have to look this up. Bubbly Sloe Gin sounds fab!

Hey sully, I am going to be in central Perth on Thursday early lunch if you all have some spare time. My treat as a welcome to Perth. http://greenhouseperth.com/

Let me know if you guys fancy it. It is on St Georges Tce which is the main business street in the CBD. I think it is your sort of place and you can taste some Oz foods.

Hi VS, that is a very generous offer thank you, but we are out and about tomorrow. Look forward to meeting you and your wife later in the year at one of the group get togethers. Will definitely look out for the place when in town. Cheers.

I'm feeling decidedly irritable today. We need to get the basic things sorted before we can really start to explore the area and have a bit of fun. All I seem to be doing is searching on the web for info on how to register for a tax number, how to get Medicare and how to activate the bank account. Each time I am thwarted by not having something or the internet not working or my messages not being sent through. I get weird messages saying something about the server is not being registered and that it doesn't send them, but some it does!! I don't understand. So here I was wondering why I hadn't heard from some people and it turns out I never sent them! Also, the internet is patchy and I keep losing connection. Grrrrr.......:arghh:

We went into Perth centre today whilst out and about. No map with us. Didn't know really where the centre was just headed for the busy bit. Ended up parking in a multi-storey car park on Pier Street which was definitely the 'wrong end of town'. We walked past down and outs, scruffy shops and squabbling aboriginal people. Not a great first impression. Eventually we found the swanky shops and imposing, imperial style public buildings, much better.

Earlier in the day whilst I had time to spare I wandered into a large art gallery that specialised in Aboriginal art. Huge brightly coloured paintings filled the walls. We walked around and chatted to the owner about them and the artists. Nothing stuffy about her, just very welcoming even to the children.

The sun shone on this Autumn day but it was really hot at times. I never seem to know what I should wear. I seem to have packed summer stuff and winter stuff but I need something in between.

I have cases still unpacked all over the place as not much point as we are only here for 1 week. Subsequently, I have 3 people asking me ...'where are my shoes? Where are my clean clothes....? I should unpack the basics but I seem to be always occupied or zooming out the door.

At least today the boys got to go in the pool even though it was freezing. One had a wet suit on, that helped. I just sat on a lounger in a sun trap and read my book whilst listening to the parrots overhead. Lovely.

I think I am at the stage where I need to see something that will make me want to pinch myself because I feel so lucky to be here. As of the moment that has not happened. We are out and about again tomorrow getting jobs done but I hope we can squeeze something else in. The jet lag is still with us and I know that can cloud your judgement so I am keeping my grumblings to myself (well apart from here) for now. I know I need to be patient, it is early days and things just have to be done.

Sully, take a deep breath have a glass of wine and chill! As you say you are still jet lagged.

Whereabouts are you based on the Swan? Why not go out for a little walk in the morning before you go to do jobs? Things start early round here and there's usually a park or an oval somewhere nearby. Failing that get yourself over to Kings Park at some point and have a wander around.

Things do take a bit more time round here and it is frustrating when you need half your life in paper form before you can do anything, but just remember you've only been here two days - take some time out to enjoy just being here.

Sully try and relax. It'll take you a good week to completely get over the jet lag! Take in some of the sights and let the boys enjoy themselves a bit more. I know there's a lot to do but it can wait. Saying that though we sorted out our Medicare, phone sims, kids swimming and TFNs today so anything you want help with give me a shout! I'll send you my mobile and email address so don't hesitate to ask. I can email you the link to the TFN website and details of the Medicare offices if you need them. You'll need your passports and visa grant notices when you go there and kindles or iPods for the kids. Chin up girl! It's not so bad!

Hi Lou, thank you. I do feel in awe of you getting that sorted in one day though.

i looked online at TFN a found I could do it online. However, it said we needed a phone number and an address, and as we are only here for 1 week and haven't got the mobile yet I put that on the back boiler.

I would appreciate links to Medicare places. Do they just need your passport and visa letter?

I've just been looking at caversham wildlife park and cheered up when I saw you could stand next to low level koalas and feed kangaroos! This is just what we need, some fun.

Sorry to sound grumpy. I obviously didn't get enough wine last night. X

I've sent you a pm with the links etc. Definitely go to Caversham; you'll all love it! It was one of the highlights of our trip here 4 years ago

And they just need all of your passports and visa grants for Medicare

The Aussie are pretty good on the net but I can send you the same links if you like?

Who is this in reply to Lou? My last post came up after yours even though I was typing it before you did yours and it was in reply to Sullys. The way it's come up looks like I'm having a go as you have now sent sully info.

As a PR resident what can you claim immediately from Medicare? Do you have to be in country for so long before you can get any free medical treatment (if that exists)

I suppose your dream wasn't living in the city in an apartment block, think of it as a little holiday. I am sure the excitement will come when you start building your life, looking at homes and schools. That's what your dream is about.

I bet your tired, emotional, and overwhelmed by anything. Just give the boys a hug and relax x
