Carpentry vetesses

I'm looking to get in touch with some carpenters who have sat the vetesses carpentry trade test? I will be booking my exam shortly but I am holding back because I need some information on the test. I have no experience regarding roofs , haven't done anything with roofs since my apprentice days. I did my trade in a joinery workshop so as you can imagine roofing is miles apart .

Would anyone have any information on what questions they ask .? I have been out of the trade for a few years because of the down turn so I will need to brush up on some stuff.

also, my immigration agent said that no one has ever failed the test but they said the same about the ielts and I ended up doing it four times.

If anyone has time to reply I would be-grateful

Hi there, my husband passed his vetassess for carpentry last year, he did the Skype interview rather than practical, it lasted about two hours and from what he remembers they asked :

roofing is covered, traditional style ones. He recommends watching some youtube videos to refresh yourself with the jargon and the techniques of traditional roofing. Mainly asked questions on work you have done in the past. You will be asked to describe the techniques you used. Basic knowledge of building techniques is asked. Nothing really about health and safety. They asked him how he would make an opening in an internal door, adding a lintel and a door. So using acro props etc.

his advice is don't worry about going into too much detail. If they want more info they will ask for it.

hope this helps a little, please let us know if you would like anything else. Good luck

Thanks for reply. My concern is the cost of the trade you would hate to fail it. I will look up YouTube videos, thanks. How come he didn't have to do the proper practical? Are you in oz now or when will you be going? Perth is where we will be heading to, there seems to be plenty of carpentry work over there

Yes it's a lot to pay out isn't it! Have you passed the first stage yet? The paperwork part? We are still in the uk, we have our visa but are still waiting to sell our house. We were hoping to be out by July but not looking likely. You can choose the Skype interview I'd you like, hubby had to go to manchester for it and it was a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than the practical. You get the option when you apply

Yea passed the paperwork stage , held off because of that silly ielts test . But glad I got it in the end. A little stressed about this trade test , nothing is ever straight forward . There seems to be a mixed reaction to the trade test online. Was your husband stressing over the exam? Is he a roofing carpenter or a 1'st and 2nd fixer.? A lot of the jobs in WA are roofing and formwork . Your so lucky to have your visa, did the visa take long once you had lodged it .

He was sooo nervous yes. I felt so bad for him. But he said it was very relaxed, the guy doing the interview was a carpenter from manchester now based in Sydney and was very friendly. Hubby is more second fix, and also does a lot of plumbing, so formwork and roofing not his forte. He mainly does maintenance, he works for local government. We got the visa very quickly. He did the interview the end of September, lodged the eoi in November, got invitation to apply two weeks after that (with the minimum points at 60) had out Medicals and police checks mid December, got visa 6th January. Now it's our house sale (or lack of!) holding us up!

Please don't worry too much about the test, are you going to opt for the interview ? Most people have said that it really is about making sure you are what you said you are on your paperwork, and anyone in the trade really does know what they are talking bout, it's just having confidence in yourself, which if you're anything like my husband you don't believe enough if your capabilities.

You will be fine! Let us know how you go.
