Carpentry work at moment - self employed or employed?

Recommended Posts

HI All

I wondered if any carpenters on here could shed some light on the work situation out there at the moment. My husband is a carpenter/joiner, we have our pr and are coming to Perth in the next few months (my Husband probably sooner.)

A lot of carpenter jobs advertised at the moment are asking for carpenters to have ABN's. Are a lot of the jobs out there at the moment sub contractor work to self employed carpenters? Ideally, he wants to be employed on a contract.

Any info would be much appreciated. We are slightly worried about the work situation as I have heard in my line of work the market is pretty slow. We need at least one of us to get a job quick!

Thanks all.

Hi, only know 3 carpenters that have come out in last year or so - everyone is self employed (tradie) - most not doing regular carpentry work but whatever they can get - maybe they/we just not looked in right places but things are very tight work wise -- that's been my experience since returning last July in any case -- probably a good move to send hubby out first

if he has experience in cut roofs i.e. not trusses but stick/ loose roof construction plenty housing going on needing plenty roofs banging on - if he can get with a gang might be ok -good luck
