Best primary schools for 4 and 5 year old. Not too far from UWA

Hello,

I am starting a PhD at the University of Western Australia, and I am moving to Perth on June, along with my wife and two kids, 3 and 5 years old. I would like some feedback as to what are the best primary schools in Perth. We do not have an apartment yet, and we want to find one that is in the catchment area of a good school. Our ideal flat would be one in an accessible area (near a supermarket and buses) and in the catchment area of a good school.

So, can you share your pearls of wisdom and tell me which are some of the best primary schools out there? We will then focus our flat search based on the schools we aim for.

Thanks

Karl

Hi,

Welcome to PP! It is very difficult for people to tell you the 'best' primary schools because it is very subjective, what is perfect for one child is useless for another! I guess a lot will come down to budget and where you can afford to live and then also what you as a family are looking for from a school. There is a link here http://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsonline/home.do that you can search by address - so you can put a suburb in and it will list all the schools in the area and give you their write up. This will give you a starting place to work from and try to narrow your search from. Personally I wouldnt consider a school until I had looked at it, but appreciate that you need to start somewhere and narrow your options!

I found it a real chicken and egg situation trying to marry house and school! Good luck and I hope you find the perfect house and school for your family!

Hi, welcome to PP.

As Walkabout says, it's pretty impossible for any of us to make any kind of recommendation. There are numerous threads about this but the situation changes year on year, term by term even. One school, with an excellent reputation may be spoiled for one year by one poor teacher. None of us know your children, their skills and attributes, their personalities and needs. This thread might help things along though;

The area around UWA (Crawley) is full of apartments rented by students so I would begin your search next to the University and in Nedlands. Nedlands primary is excellent. The three year old may be able to attend the child study centre which is on the university campus. There's a small shopping centre next to UWA which has everything.

But they won't get much for their money in Nedlands!

They are all in nice areas so the schools will be good. However, if you want to stay near the uni then Willetton, Rossmoyne and Applecross are a bit of a hike. If I were you I'd look at rental prices in areas near the uni then decide where you might you might live.. Look at shenton Park, Subiaco, Claremont as well as Nedlands. The schools in the western suburbs will all be good! It's different than the UK.
