lozzachino
My husband keeps his eye on building surveyor roles and noticed this on one of the job description forms yesterday: It is noted that the use of the title and the role of a building surveyor in the United Kingdom and some other countries is different to that in Western Australia. Building surveyors migrating from overseas are reminded that a skills assessment for the purpose of applying for a skilled migration visa is not evidence of qualification for the purpose of registration in Western Australia. http://www.buildingcommission.wa.gov.au/docs/applications-practitioner/building-surveying-practitioner-application-guidelines-131009.pdf what is the point of a skills assessment if once you are here it means nothing! Just a warning to those thinking they can come here and do the same job with no problems just because you have a visa, a needed skill and a positive skills assessment. andkel09
hi sorry to here your haven troubles but unfortunately this is the same for many professions, i work in the construction industry and electricians, plumbers, plasterers etc have to retrain in order to continue there trades in wa even tho there on the skills list, i think your best course of action is the experience you have in your industry and maybe an Australian recognised qualification which i have seen can be done online before you go, maybe this could help,
ali
The skills assessment is to say that you have the necessary skills to be able to apply for a visa. It's a bit like nursing, we can apply for a visa, but can't actually work until our qualifications are deemed sufficient for registration. lozzachino
But thats ridiculous is it not? Seems like purely money making to me. To get your skills assessed should be the equivalent of australia saying, yes you have the skills we want. Not you have skills but they count for nothing once you have paid thousands for your visa and emigration process. luckily we have jobs, but my husband has worked in building surveying in the uk previously and really enjoyed it, so has been looking at getting into it here but looks like without an $8000 course there is no chance of getting into the field. ali
I guess you know the rules before you apply - the skills assessment has always been about being eligible to apply for a skilled visa

Unfortunately that is the same for most trades, some of the electrical courses are about $3500 each and if you want the jobs you need to do them. Suppose it keeps some of the cowboys from doing a lot of damage! As said before, you should have known that before you came over, a skills assessment is only for the purpose of a visa. Loulou
I hear ya! My hubby is an electrician so did skills assessment paperwork and practical then a year later still jumping through hoops to get the licence ....totally agree that you have to do some training to understand the regs here , but no one wants to give you a job to do the training ...and you can't get the licence until you do the training !!
