Newcomers in July

Hello to everybody!

We are a family of two) no kids yet,

coming to Perth in July (visa 457 is granted)

Husband works in the heart of Perth, for me no work as for now, so I am idle all day..

I wonder what to choose as for living - a house or condo?

Never had an experience to live in the house...what to pay attention to?

I am interested in Subiaco or Freemantle or along the Swan river..

don't want to stay far from the center ..hope to have some sort of socialising (e.g. coffee, chit-chat or voluntering..)

or maybe when we arrive and live for a while I will change my mind?) who knows?

For sure we need a car or cars) Is it possible to have diesel one?

Freetime like fitness, sailing, tennis, running, horseback riding, BBQ (btw, is it popular at the backyard?)

sorry, too many questions and my introduction is quite abrupt.

I am just looking on the map of Perth and I am lost..

any kind of advice would be much appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Hi Joys and welcome to the forum.

Probably most people in WA live in a house, though there are plenty of apartments (condos) available. To a large extent it will depend on budget. Both Freo and Subi are excellent for what you want, but both are expensive.

Yes, BBQ is popular.

Thank u, verystormy!

Relocation process mode on..

What about Herdsman Lake and Churchland district?

Are districts ''divided'' let's say by communities or by any other features?

I am afraid to end up staying in the house all day as there could be nobody around..

I don't know that area very well, but it is central but I think there would be better options. What is your weekly budget?

Areas can be divided by geography. Some suburbs have little else around them, others are simply a notional boundary.

I think I have a good idea of what sort of area would suit you. When I know your budget I can suggest some options. Also, how far your husband is happy to commute.

By the way, yes, you will need a car and yes, diesel is popular here.

Alright, noted, thank u

What I saw from realestate sites, I guess a house of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms round $600 per week suits us

Actually, there are houses, villas and townhouses...difference of which I am not fully aware

Concerning my hubby, I think, he or I might be happy commuting approx. 20 minutes to the center

What is important to stay near the park, lake or river where are other people walking, jogging etc

Oh, and one more question..about the weather in July=)

how cold is it? We are coming from hot&humid eternal summer climate..

On Internet it is written that in Perth it could be up to t+10C in July...with chilly wind from the ocean..:err:

So, should I start searching for winter clothes ?

From what you have posted I would go with your original plan of either Subi or Fremantle. Both are great places to live and would offer what you are looking for. You should get something in either for $600 a week and both are in a easy commute to the CBD.

A villa / townhouse is a house that is attached to another on at least one wall. A house is a detached house, so not attached to another.

Yes, July will be cool - for you it will feel cold, also wet, so I would bring some warm clothes such as jumpers and thick coates. The plus side is that it will be the end of winter and only a couple of months to beach weather again.

Thank u for a quick reply!

First arriving to airport, we intent to buy SIM card of Pre-paid plan

to be able to use Mobile Internet and simple phone call right away.

I saw that there are three popular mobile providers: Vodafone, Tesltra and Optus

But can't figure out which one is better ? Internet says that it's Telstra (by WA coverage & data speed, but costly...what is meant by costly?)

And are their any requirements for registration of pre-paid plan?

Telstra has the most coverage. Though we find virgin fine and it normally only becomes an issue when you get a long way from Perth. Regional Australia is only covered by telstra.

Telstra are the most expensive and have a reputation for poo customer service.

To buy the pre paid sim you will need to show ID such as your passports.
