Guest emma2509
Hi! I am a Primary teaching currently working in the UK. I have a BA with hons in Primary Education, with 6 years of teaching experience across the board (year 1 to year 8). I am coming to Perth and need to know the best opportunties. I am at the start of my process, arriving in OZ December of this year and need as much advice as I can get with concerns to the best visa for me and the areas which are calling out for people with my experience. Any help would be very much appricated!!! Emma
Weedolly
I think there is a freeze on recruitment just now and from next year the Year 7 is moving up to High School instead of being part of primary which might mean even less vacancies, sorry its just bad news
Sammy1
Hi!I am a Primary teaching currently working in the UK. Any help would be very much appricated!!! Emma There are no areas in Perth that are calling out for Primary Teachers. There is a surplus of primary teachers across Australia and many are without jobs. From 2015 all year 7's in WA will go to high school for the first time, this means that a lot of primary teachers are losing their jobs or training via SWITCH (Department of Education initiative) to teach at high school level. Maths, science and design and technology secondary teachers will be in the best position to obtain employment. There is currently a freeze on all recruitment until at least June 30th. Just be aware that if your degree is not four years in length then you will not be eligible to register with any of the teaching boards in Australia. Four years of tertiary education is mandatory for all teachers. Also be aware that there have been massive cuts in education. You mention that you are coming here in December, but also ask for advice about which visa to go for. Are you coming here on holiday first or in the process of applying for a visa? Guest emma2509
I am hoping to have a visa by December rather than coming on a holiday. My degree is four years. I have also been in contact with smart teachers to see if they can help with recruitment. I also have a BTec national diploma in early years and have experience with special needs. Will this help? Do you know whether it is likely I will get a visa with no job offer? As if I can get a visa and get my face around doing supply work this will help get a full time job? ali
A lot of teachers do a couple of years 'country' teaching - it might be worth considering. As for visa, I would recommend a PR visa - for that you need to first get your skills assessed. Have you looked to see if teachers are still required on the skills lists? Sadly, as Sammy said there have been a lot of cuts to education and primary schools in particular are very affected. My daughter is currently at Uni and considering teaching as a career, I'm hoping she has a back up plan
verystormy
Emma, I would concentrate on checking if you can get a visa as I am not sure at the moment you can.

Which visa have you applied for? I was not aware that WA was sponsoring primary school teachers. To work in special needs in WA you must have a qualification, experience is not enough. However, if you are able to get the visa, then yes once you are here you can do relief work and get your face known. Sometimes a short term contract occurs when someone goes on maternity leave etc. It used to be that a teacher could work two years remote or country and then obtain permanency, but those days are long gone. Concentrate your efforts at this stage on investigating whether a visa exists for you.
AfterSchoolTutoring
I own and run a tutoring company www.afterschooltutoring.com.au in Padbury in the Northern Suburbs of Perth. As we are a growing company I am always looking for new teachers, both primary and secondary. Feel free to PM me your resume when you arrive in Australia. Good luck with your visa.
