Guest Guest6235
Hi, I was just wondering what happens when your British passport expires as mine is due to expire Jan 2016. We will be on a PR visa in oz, do I just apply for a new British passport from oz and get it posted across from UK and will it still have the PR visa linked to it. X Not sure if you become a proper full citizen just because you have PR visa .... don't you have to do that ceremony to become a citizen. I'm sure we would still need a British passport. The truth is I don't know coco. Somebody may tell us.

Sideshowdeb
I'm not exactly guessing, more trying to remember answers from when this has come up before... Can replace passport easily enough whilst in Oz but it's not as quick. Someone on Facebook recently commented on their's taking 8 weeks, which would be worrying if current passport had expired. Once you become a citizen you can have an Aussie passport and I'm sure someone will tell us when to use which one. My dual. nationality friends keep both as British allows free movement throughout Europe but use Oz for passing through Aussie borders. We renewed Rich's before applying for visa so he wouldn't have to worry about it until he had Aussie citizenship :-)
Raychelsb
I was going to post this query too as mine and my husbands runs out in 2016 too. Will be interested on answers as to how exactly you renew over there as at the moment we would go to a post office an do it.....

We didn't find this out until after Rich had renewed his, but if you renew yours before you leave all you need to do is carry your old passport as well when you validate the visa. That way you have 10 years without having to worry about it.
Guest Guest6235
We'll be leaving early next year though and I dont think you can renew a passport if it still has 6 months to run. Also we've already given details of my current passport for this visa process. I just wonder when I apply to the UK from oz for new passport if they automatically know to link in my oz PR or I have tell someone in oz my new passport details. I can't remember exactly but Rich's had over a year on it, maybe 2? May have just cost slightly more? If you do get a new one then you need to carry the old one as that is the one linked to your visa.
Guest Guest6235
Also my passport is not one of the new style chipped ones like my wife's is so not sure how they link visa to it.
Sideshowdeb
Also my passport is not one of the new style chipped ones like my wife's is so not sure how they link visa to it. It's just the passport number. They're online so anyone can check your visa status once it's granted. I think know it's just the passport number they need to check. You can pay more to have your visa stamp in your passport but it's not necessary.

Hopeful
The information I just got with my visa grant says you just need to notify them of your old and new passport numbers when you renew and they link your PR to your new passport number. Hopeful
'Changes of Passport Details It is important to notify us of changes to your passport details if you are travelling. This includes details of any new passport you obtain to replace a passport that has expired or been lost/stolen/destroyed, and any additional passport of another nationality you hold. The details of any new passport that you provide will be linked to your record on the department's systems to facilitate your travel. You are required to do this in writing and notify the nearest office of the department. You can use Form 929 Change of address and/or passport details to notify us of a change which is available at http://www.immi.gov.au/myvisa/form929' this is the paragraph in the documentation

Guest Guest6235
The trouble with this sometimes you can be typing away and posting a query and in the meantime somebody has just given the answer.

Lou8670
That makes sense, I did wonder what would happen if you lost your passport before validating? There's a form you fill in and can send to Australia House and they attach your visa to your new passport. Two of us had new passports before validating and actually moving. STEVE P
There is good info on official UK passport site, check out for scam sites that will charge for applying. I checked up a couple of weeks ago as my sons needs renewal next year. Can renew upto 9 months before due & time will be added to new one. Cost is same except for additional postage (I think it wasaround 72 quid + 27 quid postage). Probably registered post cost from this end to add. I had thought it was done in UK british embassy before looking up.
Guest Guest6235
My new passport has just arrived, it only took a week from sending it off. It still had a year to run but it's one less thing to worry about. Now to email the change to the 929 address
<Dan>
Not trying to hijack as this has answered one question. What happens with your driving licence in the UK?
Guest Guest6235
No worries Grid. Think you hand UK licence over when you get oz one so don't know what happens if you go back to UK.

My OH was warned you might have to hand your UK licence over but wasn't asked for it so has both. I still have the original green licence so they had no interest in keeping that.
