M1cha3la
Hey, Could anyone advise of some good locations to stay in in Perth during our reccie please? I am looking on airbnb, as we want to keep costs down. That factor seems to rule out any city centre accomodation, so I have been looking at suburbs, and boy are they are spread far and wide We ideally want to be able to use public transport, so good links, and all the usual spiel. I have found two that look ok, one in Rossmoyne (cheap) and one in North Perth by the Alexander Park tennis club (more expensive). The latter of the two feels the better choice, it looks closer on the map But I am trying to figure out if the additional cost is worth it, if the other has good transport links.... I have also found one in Victoria Park that looks ok... Are any of these any good, or am I way off? Help..... ali
Have you a short list of suburbs you might like to live in? It may be worth trying to find accommodation in one of those? Using only public transport will make it a little difficult to go around and see suburbs
Scot01
Are you going to hire a car? Might be better to go for something cheaper, further out and use the saving on a hire car. If you are relying on public transport then north Perth or Vic Park best.
M1cha3la
Thanks for the feedback guys I guess its not a full reccie in that sense. My DH refuses to go suburb hunting as such, as he thinks (and in a way I see his point), it is a waste of time as anything could happen in the timeframe between now and when we move. I could fall in love with one now and in a years time it might not be viable for whatever reason... When we move we will rent for a year or so and then pound the streets to find where we want to live. So I guess this is more just to get a feel for Perth more than anything (and we have to validate our visas). We can hire a car, but would prefer not to so would prefer a location with good public transport.

ali
What are the things you're hoping to see on your holiday? Have a look on transperth as it will plot your journey using public transport and tell you how long it will take you from door to door (including walking/changes to transport etc.,). Bibbs
You NEED a car. Seriously. It's a total ball ache to get anywhere major on the train. Public transport is good, but you'll be doing a lot of walking as not everything is close. Even popping to Cott for a coffee would be a mission, as the station is a fair walk away from the beach. verystormy
I too recommend you get a car. Everything here is very spread out. For example, it would be about an hour and half walk for me to get a pint of milk. Public transport is good, but can mean some long / odd trips. For example, for me to get to Fremantle which is between me and Perth, I need to get the train into perth, the get another train back south. There can also be some very long walks between places to get to / from bus stops. My wife doesn't drive so she knows just how this works. For example, for her to go to Perth city, she has a 20 minute walk. Then 35 min bus ride, then 50 minutes on the train. Also, factor in services on a weekend are limited - we go from 3 buses an hour on weekdays, to one an hour on a saturday and one every 2 hours on a Sunday. JMG79
Hi We have just come back of a recci in May. We stayed in Fremantle in a property we got of Oz house rentals, as i found airbnb quite expensive (but we are a family of 4) We ended up staying in South Fremantle, Hamilton Hlls area, which was ok, and the cheapest on offer at the time. There was a bus stop across the street, depending on which driver it was. It was an 800M walk to south beach where we could catch the free cat bus around Fremantle. There 2 super markets within about 1 Kilometre and a Woolworths 2-3 bus stops down the street. The rail links between Perth and Fremantle were good so day trips in to Perth were really easy. We rented a car from Bayswater car rentals in Fremantle, which was easy enough to walk to, or catch the cat bus again to pick the car up. It cost Aus$25 a day which I think was good compared to the competition. For the airport transfers I used go2transferes, they offer a good rate, If you stayed in somewhere like Fremantle with good public transport links you could reduce the need for a car if you are prepared to use buses and do a bit of legwork, we had no problems with the public transport system,in hind site i probably didn't need a car for the two week we were there. Is is a must, once you have exhausted public transport options!!!

Xx if you are on a tight budget try googling 'back packers' in perth, most back packer hotels have cheap rooms, and no it's not all hostels, Fremantle back packers would be an excellent location, smack bang in the middle of Freo with the train station down the road, you can go anywhere from there if you are relying on public transport. Not a bad shout. We stayed in a YHA in London recently as hotel rooms for a family of 5 are hard to find without paying through the nose. It was clean, spacious enough, we had our own bathroom and the cafe downstairs was excellent; all 5 of is ate breakfast for £18, and it was close to all the transport links too.
