Keith
Hi there I'm in the same position as your self but we are at EOI stage. We have family in perth and from what we have been told you have to be out there and the job offers come thick and fast the minute they know your from the u.k as we are regarded as highly trained engineers. It's just a bit daunting to travel the other side of the world unemployed!
Mrs T
Hi Keith, Your not far from your visa visa getting approved, all the best with it!! To be honest we are not worried by the lack of job situation, we have heard too that its more word of mouth getting work rather than applications. My husband did apply for 2 jobs via Seek and the companies have said to contact them once we arrive in Oz. His friend also works FIFO and has asked about to try get him a position, will cross that bridge once we get to it. Where in Perth is your family? We have friends NOR in Aveley and will be staying with them until we find our own home. So excited!! Its been a 2yr process but so worth it and its finally here!! Well almost!! All the best Natasha

We completely underestimated how stressfull it would be to get there so you all must be jumping for joy!

Keith
Ive had to do the IELTS even though I've got 15 years experience I'm 32 but each application can differ from the next, we are using the emmigration group to do all the paper work side of things. We're both in a very lucky position to have family there doesn't seem as daunting know you have a tour guide to show you were to shop and the best beach to get to, my w ice can't wait to wear summer clothes all the time and I'm never going to put on pants in oz ,shorts all year round for me ha! Keith
Haha only just read it back and sounds like ill be naked going to work ha! Even in the summer in the UK you can be in a coat on a day out or eating ice cream in the rain! Roll on Christmas in the sun instead of wearing a bad jumper with Rudolf on the front! We were out there last Nov and it freaked me out wondering from +38 degrees into a shopping centre to see Santa waving at people from his sleigh! Went and bought myself some thongs with a bottle opener moulded into the sole as an early crimbo present! Every time I wear them I chuckle to myself thinking of Santa:cool:
steven_gers
Just out of interest, Keith, Natasha Do you or ur partner hold formal plumbing qualifications? As I work for BG and know we dont have NVQ 2/3 plumbing, well at least I dont and I sat my apprenticeship with BG 11years ago Regards Steven
Mrs T
Hi Steven, My hubby has a SVQ Level 3 in Domestic Gas Maintenance. Our agent had looked at the plumbing route but the qualifications don't match so we went down the Gas Fitter route. He also sat his apprenticeship 11 yrs ago so I would imagine you have the same qualifications as him. Are you making the move in Sept? It will fly by, can't believe we leave in 19 days Natasha Just out of interest, Keith, Natasha Do you or ur partner hold formal plumbing qualifications? steven_gers
Natasha, We are hoping September, my wife is from Perth so just waiting on my Spouse visa coming through. I guess you would have done some research about swapping qualifications etc? The course you mentioned the Plumbing Migrant Course is that the course you're partner hopes to go on when you are over? Mrs T
Yeah done our homework. He contacted WA dept of Commerce Energy Safety and they sent info regarding permits. There are a few he can do but think he's going to apply for the a Permit to work under supervision so he can get his foot in the door, failing that it looks like he will be in college for 3-6 months to get his Class G Installation Natural Gas and LP Gas Fitting Permit. All his permits are a Gas a Fitting no Plumbing. Natasha
steven_gers
Natasha, Thats good you have done a bit of research, Although I suspect Gas Fitting alone you might struggle for work, as "plumbing" is king across there, For instance if we install a Combi boiler here in the UK we can do all the plumbing work without any questions asked, across in OZ the Gas fitter can only install the gas pipe to the water heater and the plumber does the water connections, even if its a straight swap like for like appliance! I asked to do the migrant plumbing course and was turned down, now I'm going to do an apprenticeship across there to be fully qualified plumber, Dont want to sound doom and gloom but alot of hurdles and red tape to get passed especially gas and plumbing Steven
steven_gers
Oh forgot to say, our UK gas qualifications are NOT recognised across in WA and he will have to go back to college and sit his (Restricted G-Class) gas licence before energy safety approve a licence. He wont get issued a licence with his current qualifications sorry to say.
Mrs T
Its not doom and gloom its reality! and were under no illusion how hard it will be once we arrive. To be honest my husband will do anything for work. He applied for jobs via Seek and 2 companies have told him to contact them once he arrives, so that could be something. His friend also works FIFO and has spoke to his bosses, hopefully something comes of that as money is fab!! sometimes its word of mouth or who you know rather than what you know. Not stressing about it, will cross that bridge once we come to it, we have a good chunk of savings to tide us over if we cannot secure employment straight away. steven_gers
Excellent stuff, being optimistic and positive will make it easier for you ti succeed. The mines is always an option and good money, long time to be apart thou but maybe a short term gain. I'll be living in Ellenbrook/Aveley are too so we can be neighbours ha ha. Its good right now for Rentals there are heaps available unlike last year when there was a bidding war for rentals. Steven
Mrs T
No way you are going to that area too?? haha we fortunate our friends have a nice big house there so we will be staying with them until we get a deposit to buy, not sure if we will rent first?? will figure all that stuff out once we arrive. The mines are defo not the best option, were going their to have a better work/life balance but if work is only available for the next 4 yrs its defo worth it. Will defo keep in touch and see how your progress is and let you know how bad the employment situation is Natasha
steven_gers
Yeah my wifes best friend stay in Aveley and I think its an OZ thing to have massive houses ha ha, we have a little boy so we will want to rent initially and then build a new house (hopefully) Yeah the 45hr winter shifts are a bit hard for us SG boys. We are going for the better outdoor lifestyle as sitting in the house whilst it rains has taken its toil on us. Especially the wife since she was used to glorious weather. Yeah that'll be good to keep in contact. Steven
mark.w
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but at this moment in time there are no colleges/tafe/migrant gap training in perth to get your g class gas ticket. All your UK quals are no good over here and the only way to get them at this moment in time is to do a full apprentiship this is what i have been told best thing is to contact MPA skills in Maylands or Balga TAFE or Challenger in Fremantle you will need this qualification to have any chance of gasfitting work its very difficult to get a job [it took me 8 weeks] and that was with 30 years gas fitting in the uk and after three weeks full time to get my g class licence 18 months ago it cost $2000 but this has gone up due to the grant being cut.Sorry again but it is far from easy getting a start with any firm unless you know someone this is not including your plumbing licence which i think they are still doing cost approx $3000 you need them both to have any realistic chance of getting a start good luck. Keith
Hi all , my gas quailes don't have any plumbing just gas and ventilation on my apprenticeship, it's definitely who you know what what you know but the world of business works like that especially in construction. If you know your a good engineer who takes pride in his work you will make it. I've been in contact with a guy at polytechnic in freemantle and there are available gap training courses and the plumbing can be completed at night school if need be or over 3 months every day, my contact is a fellow Pom and knows both industries very well. Are quailes can be transferred as part of the gap training as some elements are similar. Fortune favours the brave ha!!
steven_gers
I was under the same thoughts as Mark, I've spoken directly to Challenger Tafe who wont let me on the Migrant Plumbing Course due to only having unvented and water regulations as plumbing qualifications. Mpa skills advised the same, Polytechnics west said I could complete a "mini apprenticeship" as I would be considered as a 4th year apprentice, You are right in what you say regarding who you know and not what you know. But both the plumbing and gas are licensed trades and most things need signing off so you may get a TA position doing plumbing/gas etc but you wont be paid the appropriate rate, RPL can be used for many things but again its all down to the individual that is interpreting overseas qualifications and experience. Keith
The main thing is there is light at the end of the tunnel, we have financialy planned for me to be in a TA position but as nice as it would be to get over there and earn full rate we are moving to another country were there are different rules and regulations. With the experience we all have you will soon find yourself in a position of stability for our family's and the nice new life we dream of, you don't get something for nothing and the minute the tools are out we will all be fine! steven_gers
Yeah you are right there, Bloody pain in the bum all this waiting around for my visa though, who would have thought a spouse visa can take upto 9months!
Keith
You would think it would be one of the quicker visas but hey ho, I'm still stuck at the IELTS point of the process at the mo it's driving me insane but when we are sunning it up we will look back and laugh. My wife and daughter can't wait too, can't wait to get are little one settled in at a good school and escape the u.k once and for all!
