3rd shipping quote received - can I negotiate with my preferred shipper?

Well we have now had the 3rd quotation in and the results are pretty varied. All quotes are for the around the same volume 1660-1690 cubic feet and all are for a 40 foot hightop container (sole use).

I really liked the DB guy and so does my OH. Would it be OK to share the other quotes with them to see if they can reduce their price? I know one shouldn't choose shippers based on one criteria but we both really like the "feel" of the DB rep and he answered every question we had (and gave us loads of things to think about as well).

Hi there I would make sure you have the quote in writing and that it has everything you expect to be done. We were shafted when we got here as the shipper did not inform us of the cost of our container being unloaded at the docks here etc and we had to find another $3500 we weren't expecting because we packed the container ourselves!!

We went with PSS door to door service, cost us £7000 for a 40ft high cube including the wife's Mini, they were great, everything got professionally packed, then this end they unpacked and took all the rubbish with them

Hope you got your permits for your bike & car, it gets bloody expensive if they arrive without permits

Hi, good point! We are applying for the permits in mid-June as we only bought the car a year ago. All 3 companies have said they will not ship either vehicle without us showing the export and import permits. Just need to work on a date when we apply to the DVLA for the export permit as we'll be using the car right up until it goes into the container...

I would show him all quotes and get him to quote again, got to keep your straight poker face on though, it's got to be worth 10%

I've send DB the 2 other quotes and the rep has said I can call (or he will call but that would be awkward as I'm at work...) and discuss all 3 quotes. Fingers crossed he lowers his quote as I think £7k is my budget figure as with insurance at 3% on top and also fees in Perth its all mounting up!

Could I ask how the process of getting the car registered and MOT equivalent went? OH will be doing this solo as he is going ahead and he'll need to do both car and bike before the girls and I arrive.

Unless things have changed you don't need an export permit from DVLA, if you look on your V5 logbook, in the area where you normally write things in if you sell a vehicle, there is a portion where you tick the box for permanently scrapped etc, tick the box for permanently exported and pop only the slip in the mail when your car is in the container, you need to keep the majority of the V5 for the Aussies, the import permits take forever to come so I hope you not In a hurry.

I will PM you the procedure, it's not hard, just a pain in the arse and lengthy process

I had a long call with Paul from DB this morning and he picked at a few points which I have now asked the other 2 companies to confirm are included in their quotes or if not how much extra they cost.

1. Car clearance and motorbike clearance in Perth - only DB's quote states these are included (potential cost is £700)

2. Car will be shipped as hazardous by DB as they do not run the car's fuel tank to empty or disconnect the battery. Both other companies want us to run the car and bike dry and disconnect - not an option on the bike as the inbuilt alarm will trigger and the car manufacturer does not advise disconnecting either.... Potentil £300-500 extra for the other 2 companies to include as hazardous.

3. Shipping time door to door - only DB gave an estimate in their quote so need this clarified by the other 2 companies

4. Credit card fee - 1% for DB, 2% with W&C and not mentioned by JM.

5. Overcasing of car in 40" high container. DB are quoting £330. JM's quote includes this and W&C do not even mention this... Don't want to get to Day 3 of the pack and they realise they need to overcase the car!!

6. Items in the loft. DB will requote as I've said we will empty the loft. The other 2 quotes advise their workers will assess the safety and may elect not to enter the loft - best to just get anything down - do a car boot and assess the value of the rest I think!

The 3 quotes were very very varied in price and also in quality. DB gave a very comprehensive quote. JM were OK but missed a few items and W&C - well they don't even mention the car or motorbike!

Still a way to go but negotiating hard with DB to get their quote down below £7k and then I think we'll go with them! Fingers crossed my negotiating skills work:biggrin:

Just keep in mind the car & motorbike clearance they say is included, you will still have to pay the import duty, this is not included in the £700, and comes to several thousands of dollars, just be prepared.

Yes, DB have given us a (very rough) estimate of duty, GST etc for the bike and car which will be additional to their charges. I've also had a rough quote from another source as we were thinking of sending the car RORO (but OH decided against this).

It's all starting to add up... The insurance is a big one! 3% is quite a bit but as OH said its better to be insured than to take the chance on the container ship going down... (visions of the Reno in the back of our minds!).

Final quote received. We have discounted John Mason as they want to ship the car and bike with no fuel and its not practical - really surprised by their statement to run till engine stops.... no other shipping company has advised to do this and it will cause problems for the engine and logistics in Perth.

PSS will also overcrate the car and bike (price included in their quote) and have given us 4 options for "freebies" to choose from. We have also been allocated a move manager which is great as we now have a go to person for all our queries on the minor (and not so minor) queries! They will pack all household items on Day 1 and Day 2 and leave in the rooms and on Day 3 they will bring the 40" container to the house with a very long ramp (letter to neighbours needed ahead of the date to advise of a 4-5 hour slot when the cul de sac will be blocked whilst we load the car and bike and household contents ):err:

PSS quote was very comprehensive and in line with my expectations so will discuss with OH this weekend and then give them the go ahead. Will probably use Letton Percival for insurance, however need to get values in AUD for all items so that I don't under/over insure which could cause problems if (heaven forbid!) we have to put in a claim.

Just started the paperwork for the car and motorbike import permits so will need the removal quote and our house rental agreement to prove we intend living in Perth permanently. Still trying to get my head around the 100 points of ID check. Can't get a TRN until we get to Perth or Medicare but as the brilliant Druid advised there is always a way to meet the criteria.

A huge thank you to Druid for his advice throughout the "which shipping company" debate. His advice is always practical and will save both OH and myself lots of stress when we get to Perth! I've cut and pasted all his advice into an email to OH who will do the car and bike clearance in Perth:jiggy:

Hi SaffanZimbo!

Love your organisational skills!

We got a few quotes and went with Doree Bonner in the end as they offered us 8 weeks free storage in Perth which really helps us out as we are unsure when we will be ready for our container and have secured a holiday rental for the first month. We only managed to get them to drop down their quote by £100 but every little helps I guess :-) We are heading out early October with our two girls. Exciting times! Good luck with your move!

We used Crown for the simple fact that they included everything in their quote, no surprises and no extras. We had four companies round and they varied in what they included in the quote massively.

We also liked the chap from Crown a lot, so it seems it does go some way to swinging the deal.

We used insure my move for the insurance as they were around £200 cheaper than what Crown offered with less excesses.

have you done your permit applications yet? The application asks 'would you like to nominate a freight forwarding agent to act on your behalf?'. Do you think we're supposed to put the shipping company? I haven't selected the removals company yet. I'm doing the import permit now because one of the companies suggested it was better to get it sooner rather than later.
