Davy
Hi All, My wife and I would like to emigrate to Perth from UK with our baby daughter to start our new life down under. I work offshore for a global (Dutch!) oil and gas operator and internal opportunities have not been forthcoming, so we've decided to go it alone. So far the only jobs I've come across are for contractor/consultant positions, so company sponsorship doesn't look to be an option. Does anyone have any experience of this? Would we be able to emigrate to Australia as a family with me working as a consultant? Could anyone recommend a good agent to help with visas? I also realise the tax situation will be quite complex but guess that's a battle for further along the line! Any help/advice/guidance would be very gratefully received! Thanks in advance, Davy from Aberdeen PS, Any Drilling Superintendents looking for an experienced NDSV... I'm available!
beandownunder
Hi Davy, You first need to find out if your occupation is on the short occupation list, if it's not then you will not be eligible for a permanent residency visa- try this link http://www.immi.gov.au/Work/Pages/skilled-occupations-lists/skilled-occupations-lists.aspx everyone will be happy to help you on here, come back once youve checked and we can share our collective knowledge! good luck, Bean x
Davy
Thanks for the quick reply Bean! I think my profession is covered under Petroleum Engineer. That's quite a wide ranging category so I guess that covers all offshore engineers?... Cheers, Davy
beandownunder
Davy, most migration agents will usually give a free first consultation. we didn't use one but I've heard lots of good things about go Matilda. at least then you would have a start point....:-)
kimeri
Hello Davy, We used Migratus, Sophie Alberto. We had a "difficult" case, but she helped us through the all visa application, and we got our 190 visa a few weeks back. She was charging a fee for the initial consultation if I recall correctly. I'm working in oil&gas too, currently subsea projects, but got assessed as mechanical engineer. Good luck
DyLeB
Getting a visa yourself if your eligible you likely be best way forward. Go matilda have always had good reputation as well as Overseas Emigration based in Edinburgh. We are also from Aberdeen, My Oh working offshore in the Oil & Gas, but for a contractor in pipe laying. We got our visas with him as a Mechanical engineer, he is Chartered with IMechi. Look at Engineers Australia on the requirements of getting a positive skills assessment. We have looked in migrating in his current job - but the tax situation we would be worse off as he is entitled to seafarers allowance in the UK. Good Luck.
