40kg is great, but how do we transport it all?

I'm just wondering how everyone else got on with the 40kg allowance Singapore Airlines very generously offer to new migrants? We think we'll probably have 4 Samsonite cases, 4 large holdalls and 4 cabin bags. When we moved house last week we had a practice run packing and 160kg is a huge amount of luggage. We've only hired a Rav4 and don't know whether we should upgrade to a van, or if anyone had any other suggestions. I thought we could leave some in a locker at the airport to collect the next day, but Rich isn't keen on that idea as it's about a 2 hour round trip (without traffic) and it's a bit late to decide to take less as Pickfords came last week :-)

TIA

Deb x

Must admit we've thought about that, yes it's great having the extra allowance but then as you say its the pushing it all around / transporting it etc. Who have you booked your hire car with & what was approx cost. Cheers.

Bayswater, I'll double check the price, but a Rav4 was about $350 per week. You night hear them referred to as No Birds car hire too, as that was their slogan apparently.

Have you tried using the vacuum bags to put in your case it's amazing what you can get squeeze in 1 suitcase... I've just done mine.x

We bought a couple of packs of spacebags to send Bella's teddies and our duvets etc. We've didn't use the small ones. Just got to hope they didn't go on the container on Wednesday :-/

I know carry on luggage is 7kg each, and I think it's limited to one piece each. We've got 2 laptops to take and they're both going in our hand luggage. I've got cabin size cases so we can all take a change of clothes and some toiletries to freshen up at Singapore. Other than toys for my youngest I don't know what else we'll want with us? We fly out on 31st July from Heathrow. When do you plan on going? X

Hi Sideshow,

where a bouts are you staying in perth when you get there? I only ask because if you are in the CBD or NOR burbs try Mindarie Car Hire. We have booked with them as we are also flying with Singapore Airlines and have the 40kg limit each. Anyway with Mindarie we are getting picked up in the arrivals bit and driven to our short term rental up in quinns rocks in an 8seater with plenty of room for luggage. When we get to our short term, our car (just a standard size car, Hyundai Elantra) will already be there ready for us to use so no need to worry about being absolutely shattered and trying to find our rental as someone else will be driving us.

So we have got the car, airport pickup, 2 car seats, SAT NAV, 2 drivers on insurance, unlimited KM's for 21 days all for $882 which I think is a great price.

Anyway I hope this helps with your conundrum and have a safe flight. We fly on 7 July by the way, all getting really real now!!!!!

Cheers Mike

Thanks Mike,

We're staying in Rockingham, so I don't think we'd be able to book that. Great service though! What a bargain :-)

Hire a Ford Falcon or Holden Commodore wagon, they are absolutely huge and will quite easily take 160kg of luggage and 4 adults, don't forget the airlines have a H&S policy in place of 20kg per suitcase, so don't go making them really heavy or they won't take them, they have to look after the baggage handlers backs too, I have been winged at for having 23kg once, and that got a 'Heavy' label stuck on it.

hi deb, we just did the trip with 160kg (2 v.large cases, 2 large, 1 medium, 2 small trolley cases, 1 holdall, 1 rucksack, 1 trunki and a bike!) . we needed 3 trolleys at the airport to carry it all so lucky our 7 year old was able to push one lol. We also have a rav4 from Bayswater(nice car) and we did fit it all in, some cases were piled on the back seat next to my daughter, son on one side while she was in the middle and bags on other side. I figured even if I have to have one on my lap for the journey up, just to save doing a return trip, but wasn't needed!

Do remember that the cases can't weigh more than 32kg each for luggage going into the hold. Singapore offer the Extra baggage allowance for those travelling on an un validated PR visa - they don't usually offer for those travelling on 457 as this is a temporary visa.

I emailed Singapore and they said we could have 40kg each on our visa but each piece of luggage could not exceed 32kg so they must have changed the maximum weight.

It's the baggage handlers that restrict the weight of each bag to 32kg. Singapore Airlines now have a baggage allowance of 30kg or 40kg if your travelling on an unvalidated visa.
