Marksman
Hello all, First time poster and frequent reader of Perth Poms forum My wife and I had our 189 Visa approval in January after almost 2 years of struggles and then spent the last few months travelling a bit of South East Asia before arriving in Perth with nothing more than our backpacks on Saturday early morning. We were lucky enough to have a friend pick us up from the airport and take us to get some groceries and SIM cards before we settled in at our rental. We are renting in the Queens Park suburb and so far it has been very quiet, apart from the odd plane taking off. Our cars are at Freo docks awaiting release for the rego to be completed. Our belongings have been delayed and will not arrive until around 3rd of July, which is a little annoying, but not a lot we can do about it. Haven't really done or achieved much yet and we have planned our first trip into the city for tomorrow. Have to go finalise the opening of our bank account and buy a few bits and peices. We will probably catch the train further up to Ikea too as we need a bed. Still deciding wether to go straight in hard with the job hunting or taking a couple of weeks to explore a bit first. Might meet it in the middle and explore next week whilst flitting a few e-mails to perspective employers. One thing for sure we will be doing is joining a gym asap as we have over indulged a bit on the amazing Asian food Hopefully I will be able to get on the forums more often and even post a bit more now that we have finally arrived. Speak to you all soon MM
portlaunay
Hey MM, welcome to PP. Do you plan to settle in Queens Park? What do you do? Tell us a little more about yourselves and maybe people can help guide you in your first months. Welcome to Perth.
Marksman
Hi Portlaunay, Thanks for the welcome My name is Mark, my wife's name is Maxine and we are both 33 and have come from Berkshire in the UK. We haven't got our heart set on an area to settle just yet, but we have got a great deal on our current rental so we plan to take advantage of that for at least the next 6 months. Ideally, like most I guess, we would like to live closer to the sea, but we will just have to see where we are in year or 2. I am an Electronic Fire detection engineer and was a project engineer in the UK. My wife is a chef, she is looking to get back into pastry as she hasn't really done much of it since she qualified and would love to get back into that aspect of the kitchen. We both are looking into doing some form of sports. In particular I was doing some professional wrestling in the UK and might see if there is a local club. Also I had a try with some Jui Jitsu so will most likely look to try a club with that also. My wife is more interested in the gym classes. We went and had a quick look at Cannington Leisureplex yesterday and we are having a trial day there on Wednesday. Looks like a fairly decent centre. Hope that gives a little more of an idea about us
Akasully2
Hi Mark, welcome to Perth. Where in Berkshire did you come from? What type of pastry cooking does your wife do? Sounds yummy!
Marksman
Hi Akasully, I am from Bracknell and Max is from Cookham, near Maidenhead. She is definitely a dessert pastry chef! I love being the guinea pig MM

Marksman
Thanks Sunflower, We are still in travelling mode. Just been talking about spending a weekend in Freo staying at one of the hostels. Let's hope the exploring bug stays with us for a while. There seems to be an awful lot to do around here. Just limited with out a vehicle for a couple of weeks. MM

I love being the guinea pig MM Just up the road from where we were, we lived in Wokingham. Been to Cookham on a school trip to visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery. Small world! Love pastry by the way, one on my many weak spots.
Marksman
Really small world I was involved in the building project of the Stanley Spencer museum too. Max used to live across the road from it also. How long have you been in Perth Akasully?

Marksman
We used John Mason. Very good price although it is arriving a month later than we asked it too, but our boxes got put into a shared container so maybe it took a while to fill one up to send. Apart from that found them to be excellent.
Peata Whyted
Hi Marksman, very, very small world. I work for Honeywell, and although I was based in Manchester, I spent a long time working out of Bracknell and looked to settle in Wokingham before the Aus role surfaced. Drop me a PM if you want my details to send a CV as we may need fire engineers in the near future.
Marksman
Very small world Peata! I probably drove past Honeywell in Bracknell everyday. I will drop you a PM for sure, any information about any jobs would be greatly appreciated
Akasully2
Hello there, Berkshire people! We have been here nearly 4 weeks now. When I think back to what we did that first week, it seems ages ago. We have achieved sooo much since then, it makes my head spin. Thankfully though so far everything has gone really well for us and we are loving it. All the best.
Australia94
It's a very small world. Seems strange that there are so many people moving from in and around Bracknell. Maybe it's just that we are all trying to escape the town. After 35 years we are finally moving on the 27th August.
nikkiwd
My brother still lives in Bracknell, it would be nice if he escaped and came here too

By far not the worst place to live but all the same by far not the best either. Good luck with the move Mark.
Australia94
Bracknell could definitely be worse. Lots of green open spaces and woodland. Just a shame that the town centre is such a shambles.

At least they are having some attempt with the regeneration. Just a shame the way they have managed the project overall, but it was nice to see it started before I left. Mark.
