HELP on how to start from scratch in Perth... moving on August 2014

Hello! The inputs in this forum are very helpful. I hope to hear more. My name is Boggs. I am 29 years old, male, single from Manila, Philippines. I was approved of Skilled Regional Sponsored (Provisional )(class SP) Skilled - Regional Sponsored (Provisional) (subclass 489) visa on January 2014. I am intending to move to WA on August 2014. Condition of my visa is that I must must live and work in a regional and low population growth metropolitan area; postal codes: 6041 to 6044, 6083 to 6084, 6121 to 6126, 6200 to 6799. I will be on my own, by myself. I do not have friends or relatives in WA. I will barely start from scratch. What should I do in preparation for the move? As a background, my nominated occupation is hotel or motel manager. My recent post was Assistant Manager, Front Office at InterContinental Manila (5 star hotel under the InterContinental Hotels Group - IHG chain). I am open to opportunities not limited to hospitality/tourism industry.

1. How do I know where I will stay? On my research, Mandurah seem to be nice. Your thoughts? Any suggestions?

2. How do I find a practical/ economical place to stay (e.g room share, etc.) which is accessible to public transportation especially going to city center?

3. Job hunting

4. What to do upon arrival in WA?

Awaiting for your feedback.

Thanks,

Boggs

Hi and welcome.

First, mandurah is a lovely place to live. I live there and have for 6 years. It is also the closest regional place to Perth.

You might have to book some temporary accomodation for when you first arrive. Look at stayz.com for some options. Once here, look at gumtree for rooms in shared houses.

Mandurah has a number of hotels in the area and simply popping in with your cv might be a good option. The main web sites for jobs are indeed.com.au and seek.com.au

Between now and your arrival the main thing to do is save money. It will usually take some time to find work and you need to be able to survive till then.

Welcome to PP. This is a great site for finding out lots of info about your move!

Where will you stay? That's the big question but as you're restricted to regional the largest 'city' in WA you can live and search for work in is Mandurah. Obviously being in the hotel industry you may want to look further south such as Bunbury and in and around Margaret River.

As VS says, lots of things are advertised on Gumtree here including jobs and room shares etc.

When you arrive in WA there are a few things you'll need to do such as obtaining a tax file number, registering for Medicare, opening a bank account, registering the fact you're arrived if your visa requires it, obtaining an Aussie driving licence if you drive, obtaining medical insurance or at the very least ambulance insurance.

Good luck with your move and as VS says, make sure you save as much as possible before you arrive.

Lou

thank you for your reply. Do you mind sharing inputs about other regional areas in WA where it is best to stay and find a work (aside from mandurah)? My field is in the hospitality industry. These are the postcodes: 6041 to 6044, 6083 to 6084, 6121 to 6126, 6200 to 6799 allowed on my visa. Also, how do I get police clearance? I was told that I can do it on-line. Is that possible eventhough I am not yet there? How about tax file number? Can i do it on-line? sorry to bother you will all these. the date is getting closer; mixed emotion --- excited and scared as to what may happen. I am keeping the positivity though. :-)

you need a medicare number in order to apply for a tax number as you need a certain amount of ID. They asked us for medicare before we could complete the tax number, This may differ for people, but the biggest challenge is having the ID needed for a 100 point check. You can search the various agencies you intend to apply to in order to get this information specifically for each avenue.

You need evidence of a permanent address in the form of a rental agreement/ bank statement with your address - you will need this to get medicare and also tax number.

Police check wise, forms may be collected in person from a post office. Once again you need 100 points of ID in order to complete one. You then take it back to the post office to be processed.

Good luck.
