ICU nurse - where to look for a job!

Recommended Posts

Hi Claire

I emailed the hospitals direct to the nursing recruitment bit on their webpage, however a few have replied to me saying to contact agencies? You might have more luck as ICU is normally sought after.

Have you looked at http://www.nursing.health.wa.gov.au/home/

It says there is a recruitment freeze till the end of June! Bit frustrating I arrived 2 weeks ago and have just started looking properly, have applied to some agencies as waiting on AHPRA regsitration still so looking at Nursing assistant roles till that comes through.

Are you in Oz or UK?

Good luck!

I have emmigrated, been here 2 weeks. still waiting on AHPRA registration so have contacted agencies about nursing assistant roles just to earn some money whilst waiting. Its worth getting more experience i think a lot of places want 1-2 years plus u will feel more confident then too.

and save save save lol its expensive here!

Hi there thanks for the reply. I have seen a few people mention waiting for the registration, is your down yet ? I have been looking at jobs and doesn't seem to be much available but I won't be coming just yet until visa is all sorted out. Think we have the money for visas etc but now to save for flights, a container and living when we get there! A long way to go!

Hi all,

Landed in Perth a few weeks ago me hubby and 10 month old. I am a registered nurse with 4 yrs surgical experience in UK. So far no luck even finding a job vacancy to apply. Landing during job freeze didn't help either. Hubby a reputed head chef in UK is even struggling to find a job. He has applied for around 50 jobs with no response yet. All savings from sale of house is melting away. Had to give 6 months rent in advance to secure rental. It took a big chunk of around 15K off the savings. And managed to get a very old car for 6K. Feeling really down. Worried how we are going to manage in few months down the line. Just looking for words of wisdom.

Hi Miss Rose,

I have got AHPRA. Have registered with WANA agency. Awaiting work with children's check. Hopefully will get some shifts after that. Both our profiles are in seek. Fingers crossed. It is my second migration. I was trained in India originally. Moved to UK with 4 yrs Medical experience after marriage. UK NMC was more complicated than AHPRA. Finished everything and finally felt settled in UK. But hubby always had a pull towards OZ. So finally after my citizenship ceremony in UK, I agreed to try for Oz. after getting ANMAC and AHPRA in 6 weeks, skill select in 1 week and getting direct grant of 189 visa within 2 days of application, Oz visa process was a breeze.

We felt very lucky. Still do. But just as the savings disappear and no vacancies on board, it is very scary. Especially now having a bubba to feed to, I worry too much. I have been a silent guest reader of Perth poms and Poms in Oz for few years. It was today I registered to post for the first time. I have always been hoping to write a dream came true post. It is a bit disappointing to write my first post like this. But having some where to turn to, I am very greatful for this site and members. Hubby who was the driving force behind the move is missing UK already which is making me lose my confidence even more. Hopefully things will fall into place

You need to give it time. Employers are different here and it isn't unusual for them to take several weeks to reply to applicants. Government jobs also have particular closing dates and they won't even start looking at applications until after that date.

Do look on seek daily - I have seen a lot of nursing jobs on there in the last few days.

Remember though it takes on average a few months for people to get their first jobs.

Vishva, please don't lose hope. Has your husband been to see lots of agencies? Meeting face to face with people are so important. He should follow up every application with a phone call if he isn't already. What type of work does he do?

In regard to your nursing, there are lots of nurses on here managing to get jobs so I'd tap them up for tips on what to can do to improve your chances of securing work.

Also, don't hover in the shadows...we're hopefully organising another meet up for families. Come along...it'll make everything brighter and you never know you might meet someone who changes your fortune.

I'm sure it'll all come good in the end but I agree it's a very expensive along the way!

Hi Lou,

Hubby hasn't been to many agencies yet. Only been sending applications to employers online via seek, indeed, wa jobs etc., He used to work as a Head Chef in UK. Continental and European cuisines. We sure would be interested to meet up. I will ask hubby to call the employers and follow up the applications. Fingers crossed !!

Hi

I emigrated to perth last november. I'm a uk registered children's nurse with 7 years critical care experience but had been out of acute nursing for 3 years due to community nursing. No agency would recruit me into the hospital due to no experience in the past 2 years but nurse west did. Nurse west are the last agency to cancel shifts as they are part of the department of health. You can apply to them online. Yes there is a current job freeze but in the hospitals they are often looking for staff so good luck!!
