Nurse with 8yrs Experience, currently band 6 in UK. What can I expect??

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We are looking at job opportunities, preferably I would like to come on my husbands visa, so that I can be at home with the kids and make sure they're settled for a while before finding work myself, but it looks like we may have to come on mine. So what we're thinking is for me to work full time, until my husband is working/earning enough for me to go part time.

I am a qualified nurse and have 7yrs experience, I have worked in acute medical care, Intensive care and am currently a Tissue Viability specialist nurse. My wages at the moment are £26k a year for full time work (37.5hrs a week)

My question(s) are

If I came on my visa to a full time job, (via a sponser) how long do I have to work for before I can drop to part time, if our finances allow?

What kind of job opportunities are available to someone with my experience? Do they have specialist nursing teams like the one I am in?

Can I get an average or an idea on wages.

What are the working hours? over here currently I do 8:30-16:30 mon to fri. But if I were to do shift work it would be 07:00-15:00 or 13:30-20:00 or a long day which is 07:00-20:00

The short days are rolling so I could end up doing a ten day stretch before a day off, unless I opt for long day which means 3 days a week. is it similar over there?

Also Location: How far do you have to travel a day to get to work? is it worth living closer to the city? Or can I get to work easily living further away.

Lastly I have seen the total cost to make the move can be up to £10k is this just fo rthe ones that have come over and done it alone? Do nurses coming on a sponser get any help with the moving fees such as, medicals skills assessments etc?

We haven't yet decided on an area of Perth yet. So info from all areas would be fine.

Thank you in advance

Personally, I wouldn't come out on a sponsored visa - it binds you to the employer and there is no guarantee that they will sponsor you for PR. A few years ago a nurse came out with the promise of being sponsored for PR but the hospital then put a freeze on it. The 457 is a temporary visa and I think that you have to work full time for the duration. What I have noticed is that some adverts are specifically saying that preference will be given to Australian Citizens and Permanent residents - so if a job you go for is competitive and candidates very similar, preference would not be given to the person who needs sponsorship. The organisation I work for is now not offering any sort of financial package for nurses coming from overseas - there just isn't enough money.

I work in Mental Health, so am not sure about what is available in tissue viability, but it may be that not all hospitals do this. If you're applying for a level 1 Registered nurse position then with 7 years experience you would expect to be at level 1.7 (sorry I don't know what this is). Again, different hospitals work different shifts and don't generally mix the shifts with some working long days and others not - but if this is important you should ask at interview.

I know of people that travel for an hour to get to work - but I wouldn't want to do that, for me, I got a job offer then looked at suburbs approximately 30 min drive away, we also had children so being able to get home quickly if we got the dreaded "your child is unwell" call from school was something that we considered.

Thanks for the info,

For the same reasons I took a role, that allowed me flexibility around the children, so yes being a shorter commute from work would be better for me. Also the shift pattern again something that fits in around childcare and school!

What are the school hours anyway? And how flexible are employers to working parents?

They do look at work life balance, but to be honest you probably wouldn't be allowed to work long days unless that was the shift pattern of the whole team. I'm not 100% but have read that if you're on a 457 which is the sponsored temporary visa then you had to work full time. I think primary school hours are around 8.40 - 3pm Flexibility will really depend upon your employer and where you're working - again I would probably ask these things at interview so you know what you're getting into.
