portlaunay
I don't want to scare anyone but just wanted to raise awareness. There's no risk of a tsunami to mainland Australia but there may be people working offshore who could be affected. Hope everyone's okay. http://www.ga.gov.au/earthquakes/getQuakeDetails.do?quakeId=3541548&orid=950420&sta=XMIS
nikkiwd
thats really strange as my OH was googling about the earthquake risk in Australia just a couple of days ago, looking at all the fault lines and earthquake history etc...he sounds a bit geeky now! I did the same Nikki a while back. I love living near the sea but know what devastation it can cause to homes. Most of WA homes are now being built on a plain which is at seas level and didn't exist that long ago in geological terms. Basically the hills used to be the coastline... nikkiwd
yes I figured thats why the soil here seems to be just sand. We have decided to live slightly inland
Nikkis2000
Areas such as Alkimos are literally being built on the sand dunes!
nikkiwd
We are in Ridgewood in our short term rental, not far from Alkimos and its pretty sandy here too. you wouldn't think sand was a very good base to build houses on !
verystormy
Geologically, Australia itself is very stable. There are no large active faults. However, large parts are susceptible to tsunami.
Lou8670
Geologically, Australia itself is very stable. There are no large active faults. However, large parts are susceptible to tsunami. It's mainly the northern areas though isn't it VS? Only reason I'm cautious is that you only have to have a big storm surge....saying that though I want to live close to the sea
verystormy
It depends on where the quake happens as well as a lot of other factors. Perth does have tsunami alert systems and is covered by the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning system.
