TBH I really wouldn't bother unless you either really love it or it's worth a lot of money.

Have you not already answered your own question? Your own estimate puts the cost of shipping over the value of the car and they look to be up for around $7k here. Therefore you're not really going to save anything shipping a car like that over. In fact, if you factor your time to organise it and then put aside some contingency just in case customs decide it needs to be quarantined you're probably worse off.

Look up Iron Lady imports and have a chat with Christian or someone there. They have a good reputation and will be straight with you.

Welcome to PP by the way.

We brought over our car last June and even though I'm glad we brought it over, it was a lot of messing about. It was a good job hubby was not working when we got here, as there was trips to the port to pick the car up, then book in a time for it to go in the pits, you have to arrange a permit for every time you take the car out of the drive, then send off some paperwork, and then wait for yellow sticker before booking car back into the pits, to show you have yellow sticker, then trip to the licensing place for plates. As Porty says unless it is a very special car or you are going to save thousands, which luckily we did, the same car to buy here was tens of thousand, it really is not worth the hassle.

Thanks for all your help people!

I just needed to hear from people to show me the light,

I read on forums for a decent car you will need to look between $5000 - $15000 for something decent? possibly with high mileage

That's why i'm contemplating on taking my own known working vehicle

We are taking our car as when we did our reccie OH went with a friend to look at second hand cars and was shocked at the prices.

Our car is a 2009 VW Passat Estate with towbar, DVD headrests, Bluetooth etc and although the paperwork and legwork in Perth will be time consuming we are happy that when our container gets to Perth we will have a car we know and love to use.

The value in Perth was nearly 2.5 times its UK value for the standard model but more importantly we know our cars history and there are no hidden faults.

Its a personal thing for us and maybe not the most financially savvy thing and hopefully something we don't regret.

Thanks Saffanzimbo, unfortunately that's exactly what i've found looking at oz ebay and gumtree some real tin cans out there for high prices, just as an example my brother in law just purchased a 2007 hyundai elantra 2.0 petrol auto with over 90000 miles. It sounds nice but from my experience about 90k + is when clutch, brakes, timing, water pump and things require attention, not sure after just moving there it's a hit I want to take, my car only has 60000 on the clock and touch wood seems to be ticking over nicely, no advisories from last 3 mot's, still toying with taking it over, not sure i'll have time to look for a car, with researching area's, schools for kids, property to rent, looking for a job etc...

I brought my 2009 Mini convertible, well worth the agro, I was going to lose thousands selling it in the UK, and with that money I would have been luck to buy a second hand Getz with a million miles on it, I did everything myself, but I did download Iron Lady's excel spreadsheet and added my own numbers to get some idea of cost, your figures look pretty good.

Get an an online valuation certificate in UK pounds from Red Book, Glasses Guide etc, and then again from the same sort of Aussie valuations, make sure it's specific to your car mileage etc and not the free one you get

Bear in mind that the costs seem expensive when you're constantly recalculating from AU$ to £.

It takes 6-12 months before you stop doing that and understand the local economy and then realise your income has probably increased by a proportional amount too. It's easy to fall into the trap of comparing like for like but that's not what you're doing here.

You have a car worth £2500 ($4.5k)

You spend £3500 getting it here ($6.3k)

A quick look at Carsales and an equivalent replacement is going to cost around $10-15k

For all the hassle, I'd be leaving it behind and bring the $10.8k with me and buy something here.

Druid, thanks for the heads up. I will check those online valuations.

That is a relief regarding the air con, I keep trying Iron lady but there website is down/in process of moving, has been for a few days

I will def lose money selling the car, def don't want a car with a million miles on it,

I am going to take the car, and will detail my experience on here for other to make an informed decision. Most of my research was thanks to your posts Druid, so thank you for that.

Hi portlaunay, I completely understand your figures, but if i'm bringing a household with me anyway why not just stuff the car in too, the £3500 to bring it here I think is a pill i will have to swallow either way, still getting quotes for containers of all sizes, i'll see how it pans out with costs

I am just starting to get shipping quotes but the first guy I have had out to quote said that they can ship the car in a 40ft container with our household goods, but it's much cheaper to do RORO and have a 20ft container for household. Have you looked into this yet?

Problem with roll on roll off, it that the car may sit outside on deck for a number of weeks, it will get unloaded in Hamburg & then again in Singapore & eventually in Freo, possibility of damage is very high, if you're going to all that trouble to get it here, why risk it

Maybe a daft question, but how do new cars get shipped? I thought they'd just go RORO. I do agree with you though...from the little I've read!

New cars are shipped by the hundreds in great big vehicle carrying ships, looks like a giant North Sea ferry, I watched one get unloaded in Freo one day, we went looking for the US Navy Aircraft carrier, turns out it was moored 'Off' Fremantle as it was too big to enter the harbour, one of the support ships docked though.

My mates land rover camper came over on a container ship loaded on the bow, it was too high to fit in a container, so the shipping company arrange to load on a container ship, I will try find the photo he sent me way back, it looks weird chained to the bow. I was thinking more like this sort of shipping, RORO looks great, just like a North Sea ferry.
