Plimthing
Hope you all enjoyed the fog last night! Unfortunatly hundreds didnt as they were circling around Perth trying to land at the Airport! Perth International doesn't have all the hi tech gadgets to help planes land automatically like they do in Europe. Its a bit like the argument in UK ' why spend money on gritting roads it doesnt snow much?!", here its usually perfect flying weather why pay for a hi tech landing system? Pilots dont like flying with 300 metres visibilty at night at 100metres per second so they opt to divert to another airport. Last nights divert was...Adelaide! In Europe they would just switch on Autopilot then Autoland and relax and then let the clever bits of computers work there magic then its back to the bar for tea and tiffin! So for all your friends and family who were delayed last night, dont blame airline, pilots, engineers etc blame the government for not investing in infrastructure and technology. However you will have shiney new terminals to wait in while the planes land in another state. Edited June 20, 2014 by Plimthing

Bibbs
blame the government for not investing in infrastructure and technology. I say that's a good thing. Thanks for not wasting my tax money on something that would be hardly used. Would rather the money went on terminals and a train line. I have worked all over the world and every international airport has a Cat III Instument Landing System, they are 'used' daily in strong winds, heavy rain, low visibilty to reduce workload for pilots. After a long flight from Dubai, having to drop into Perth to find its down to 350 metre visibility is the last thing you want as a pilot (as he is only human and gets tired and can make mistakes) you would welcome every bit of help you could get. I believe industies call it risk management, weighing up costs over risks. Hope the starbuck coffee is worth the risk as they pull people out of a burning plane. Bibbs
As of last year .. http://ypphupdates.wordpress.com/2013/07/25/transmissometers-to-be-installed-at-perth-airport/ Perth Airport is consulting with Airservices Australia on upgrading the current Category – 1 Instrument Landing System to a Category – 3 which deems zero visibility landings. Currently, Melbourne is the only Australian city to have this technology. So Melb got theirs in 2008, no others have gone in yet. Not even Sydney. I believe Perth is next on the list. Plimthing
Sydney has already got a Cat 2 ILS approach on 2 of its runways, enabling approach to be carried out with a visual range of 350m and a decision to land height of 60m, thats why they havent gone in for it. Also Sydney as a choice of divert airports within a decent range and not a 3hr20min flight to Adelaide. So with the relaxed Wait Awhile attitude of WA, Perth will get one in time to be out of date as all of the new airliners operated by the major carriers are fitted with Microwave Landing system. Anyway the Fog is the least of my problems as Airbus has grounded its A320 fleet until engineers perform inspections of engine bolts on all A320 aircraft. So, if you are flying with Jetstar/Virgin today you may be delayed a tad (unless you are flying on an A330, E190 or 737 in which case you will be ok!) so you can have a coffee or 3 in your new terminal.. oh no, you can't, cause thats not finished yet either. How many of these planes carrying 300 people have crashed and burned in severe weather trying to land in Perth? Have you raised all these fears with your superiors? Or are you just having a whine on an Internet forum to make things better ? People who are almost certainly much more qualified than most of us have made a decision, maybe they are right or maybe they are wrong but does scaremongering really help? Yes it has been raised with superiors. Also many people working in ATC also feel the same. No aircraft have crashed at Perth as far as i know. It is a whine yes, however, why not have all the available safety features an airport can offer? You wear a seatbelt in you car, right? Its also probably got airbags too? COsts a lot to design and put them in, but they save lives. Some people opt not to use them, others wear them all the while and feel comfortable and safe. Apologies for scaremongering, but that wasn't my intention, if it was i could scare the lot of you with facts about the aircraft you all fly on to get to Australia.
