ImmilBees
Hi all, My husband and I have decided to try and get out to Oz by next year, we thought September would be a nice time to go as I believe it would be coming into Oz spring, so we get a chance to acclimatise to the weather. But also on a personal level we were thinking of tying leaving parties in with my 30th birthday, and my daughters 5th. The question is she is due to start school next september in the UK. Does anyone know that if we do get to leave in september if there would be repercussions if we didn't register her with a school?? I don't see the point in making her go to a new school, for one or two weeks to be taken out and then have to go through it all again in Oz and probably not straight away. I think the upheaval will be too much. Also what are the school terms in Oz? I've heard they start in February, is this right? if she does start in September will she then be half way through the term and then classed as behind? So would it then be better to come over in the January so she can start in February at the beggining of th eterm, or am I just thinking far too much into this?? What have any of you done with children at a similar age? Thanks Claire
<Dan>
We are flying out in November and are keeping our two in school almost up until the last day (They actually asked too!) and obviously the school term in Perth (Piarra Waters) ends on 19th December until the beginning of February. Im guessing all schools will be similar dates. I dont think there would be any repercussions as long as you explain here in the UK why they are not in school. I know the head at our youngest school has said not to formally put in writing that she will not be attending until the last possible date as getting a place back in school once she has left would be hard. hibster76
Children here do not legally have to start school until the term after their 5th birthday.
oysterbay
Hi you don't have to enrol her in the UK . people who chose to home school would not. if you do enrol her and you decide she isn't going to go then you will have to deal with an education officer.(not sure how complicated that would get and with fines etc for not attending it might be problimatic) so if you know when your going and its just a couple of weeks of school maybe don't enrol her at all
Akasully2
Always assume things could go wrong and just make sure you have her enrolled. If at the start of term you have your flights booked and you are certain you are going, then you should write to them explaining you will be emigrating. This will free up the place for someone who may be on a waiting list. No one is going to chase you for two weeks. My sons have just started at their new Oz school this week. They are used to people arriving part the way through the year. Each term is 10 weeks long.

Maybe ring the school you would enrol her at to explain your sitution and they might be able to offer you advice x
ImmilBees
Lovely thanks everyone, her 5th birthday falls on the first week of term, but we were planning on going around then as flights will probably be cheaper too, I just didn't want to start her in a new school, have her make new friends and then disrupt it all again and put her in another new setting to have to make friends all over again. I know kids are very adaptable though, I remember new kids starting all the time at my school, kids can be quite accepting. Good point about the assumption that something may delay us though. Thank you. x
clairej456
hi there really strange reading this as i am also in the same position. my son starts school this sept and we plan to go oct-nov time next year so wasnt sure what we do and when to do it! i also wasnt sure how far in advance to find him a school as we will not know our nearest one until we are there and can find a house. what to do first! claire
Akasully2
Claire, It is simple. I can only say this as I have just gone through it. Enrol child and start school. When nov comes and you are just about to go for certain, officially write to the school stating leaving dates. Before this as a matter of courteousy you should tell the school your intention but stress that it is unofficial and to keep the place open until you formally notify them, things can go wrong. Once here relax, look around areas to live, then the schools and visit them to see if they suit your child. If you live in catchment they have to take you, so none of this that you get in the UK of them being full. It may take a month of being off school until you are all settled but it really doesn't matter. I hope that helps.
