mrsstaden
Hello! I hope you are all well My husband and I have been researching Australia for about 4 years now and almost moved to Sydney in 2011 but had to turn down my job offer due to father in laws ill health. Since then we've had our little girl who is 2 in August and are back on the researching bandwagon. We have decided on Perth and are excited to begin the process! We aren't sure it will go smoothly though as, although hubby's job is on the SSL, the aussie description of his job is different to the UK version! Eeeeeek! I have some questions and was wondering if you lovely people could answer some for me? * Where is best to live for poms moving over? North or south of river? * How far is Butler from the city by train? * If our daughter is 3 when we come over, will she need to be enrolled in school? Thanks in advance! Deb
Hi in where to live north or south its a decision that only you can make.We are south we like it but we also like north. Best to just pick a area and if you dont like just it you can move some where else.Best renting for a while then you can see what right for you. School I would not no about them but plenty on here that help you out. Good look with the move

ali
Welcome to PP - NoR and Sor are both great, I would be led by where you get work and what sort of commute you want.
verystormy
Hi and welcome to pp. The first thing is the visa. If the description is different then that is a major issue as he will need to pass a skills assessment based on the australian description. It doesn't mean that he can't apply for a visa. It means that he needs to apply under the correct occupation. It may be worth speaking to a good migration agent for advice on this. Try Go Matilda. Lou8670
Sometimes the descriptions are different and it might be his jobs in the list under another title he's not so familiar with. Before you go any further you need to find if there is one listed that matches his skills. This is great place to find out what others have done. Welcome to PP! EmsyEss
Hi and welcome to PP! I also have a daughter who turned 2 in May (also have a 9 month old daughter ) can't help about schooling as we are moving out in 3 months time and I'm in the midst of suburb research. Like others have said it's really difficult to decide prior to arrival. We are basing ourselves in kingsley in the north for the first 4 weeks. Dependent upon my husbands place of work we've researched a lot of suburbs based on their school rankings, commute to the city and beach, local amenities, rental and housing costs and we are currently choosing a range that we are going to visit when we arrive. We hope we will get a feel for where we want to be once we are actually there but researching beforehand definitely gives you a feel for different neighbourhoods. It's such a personal choice and I guess once you have your visa you need to decide what is the most important things to you and your family as to where you live.... :-) hope that helps and makes sense...my two have been up since 6.15am so half asleep as haven't had my coffee yet! mrsstaden
Hi everyone! Thanks for your replies. My daughter is called Isla and she is 2 in August. Quite glad we dont have to worry about schools just yet! We have been drawn to NOR for some reason! Have been looking at realestate.com for rentals in Butler, Quinns Rocks, Joondalup....that sort of way. How far from the city are these places?? Its quite hard to gauge on a map! My husband is hoping to come out on a 457 visa as we think there is less risk that way. And thats where the problem lies. We started approaching companies about a year ago and found it very difficult to find ones with the same job description. He is a Quality Assurance Director for a large recruitment agency. Quality Assurance is on the SSL but we think it means something totally different in Australia! Eeeeek! We cant leave the UK until July 2015 at the earliest so we dont need to 'worry' about it as such yet but its still in the back of our minds that we may not get the visa required to come over. verystormy
You certainly need some professional advice. As you have spotted, QA here is much more related to engineering. There are also special considerations for company directors that I am not familiar with. However, I would urge you to reconsider the idea of a 457. This is by far the most risky visa and not one that I normally recommend for families. First, it is only a temporary work visa that allows you to live and work in Oz for a fixed period of up to 4 years. But there is no automatic path to PR. The main issues are that it is linked to the employer. So, if he were to lose his job, you would all have 90 days to find another with a company willing and able to sponsor or leave the country. You would be surprised how often that happens. There are a range of other negatives, such as children of 457 have to pay for education - $4k per year. I would again recommend you contact a good migration agent such as Go Matilda. They will do a initial assessment for free.
