kealeyjay
we rent our house out in the UK and expect the tenant to make it a home as long as they put it back to how we left it before they move on. from what I have been reading, it sounds like this is not the case in perth? I have shipped over loads of house bits to make our house a home and am now concerned I wont be allowed to put wall hangings up etc? and when it comes to painting... how does this work? as we have a little girl who obviously needs a pink room haha! thanks for any advice
fifi69
It's a very strict system they here. Your not really allowed to do anything, no pictures up, although you can do if your willing to fill the hole after. Painting is a def no no. Its all a bit of a farce. Check out the threads and get prepared. Make sure you take photos of any damage when you first move in or it could cost you your bond. verystormy
Very different here. When we first me we lived in a rental and did loads of things - painted, put up pictures, tweaked the kitchen. Here, we can't do anything. Most are inspected every 3 months and they would go barmy if you have put a nail in a wall. The one exception we have done is to have a doggy door put in. But, we will have to replace the glass back to what it was when we leave.
Lou8670
I've been thinking about this too as we have 3 children 10 and under and will be renting a house shortly in WA. I've heard the same thing but I'm hoping our landlord will let us put up a couple of pics. We're renting privately and know the owners but I can also completely understand they won't want holes in all the walls of their brand new rental! So I've been looking at how I can "jazz" it up a bit when we have neutral carpets and walls with coloured freestanding shelves and cupboards and bright duvet covers and lights shades in the kids bedrooms. ali
You will have to ask for permission in writing and check what you're going to have to do afterwards, as you might end up painting an entire wall if the paint doesn't match.
kealeyjay
ah these were not the replies I was hoping for haha!! hopefully we will have a nice landlord! thanks everyone x
nikkiwd
the kids rooms in our rental both have a coloured wall so not just plain white and my daughters room had a couple of hooks already there so I hung her things up, we are not allowed to put any more holes in though so I have stuck some removable hooks on her new loft bed and draped her pink bunting around the bed instead and it looks good! we were also lucky as our meals/family room has some hooks so we put our pictures up but the living room is bare... maybe choose a rental that has hooks already :-)

We would look in to buying also for the same reason but the whole point in renting is to get a good feel for the area before buying a permanent family home. So all round it's STUPID, I guess now I'm also guna be house hunting for good paint colours as well as location ect x
Sideshowdeb
Someone on here the other day said it's a "renters market"! If that's the case then it's worth asking the question to see if people are open to a bit of personalisation. Surely it can't hurt to ask? ali
If you do get permission - get it in writing, so they can't keep your bond for 'damage' to the walls
nikkiwd
When you leave a rental you have to have the carpets proffesionally cleaned and show the receipt to prove its been done. I am still thinking of ways to brighten up our living room...maybe hang some streamers from the fan
verystormy
One thing we do is have a large artists easel in the corner of the room with a picture on it.

I saw an easel online today and thought haha, that's how I could display some art in my rental!
Sideshowdeb
Has anyone tried Command strips? Are they available in Perth? They're pretty good and I've hung photo frames with glass in before. I'll be putting a few packs in my suitcase just in case?
liloharry
It's not all bad re the picture hooks, I'm in my 4th rental and 2 of the houses have more hooks than I have pictures for and the other two were totally fine about us putting screws in the wall for pictures, we got permission and left them in for the next tenants. I've had permission to paint my daughters room too.
