senior schools - arghhhh

hi !

im trying to sort out a senior school for lauren, shes at the end of year 5 at the mo. im checking all of the ofsted reports and they are truly shocking, there is 1 school that i know of that is outstanding on all accounts, however, this is a grammar school so lauren would have to sit her 11 +

if lauren were to sit her 11+ would it count in oz?

we are planning to come out sept 2015 before lauren is due to start senior school, but if it doesnt happen in time i have to have another alternative.

thanks

It will depend what month your daughter is born to which year she goes into,Good school reports will help but 11+ wont make much difference, unless she has a chance to be put in a gifted and talented class, this will depend where you live and what schools you choose and if she can get to do the exam which have cut off dates. More importantly make sure you bring a copy of all her vaccinations from your doctor. this might help for information http://det.wa.edu.au/schoolsandyou/detcms/schoolsandyou/schools-and-you/shared/enrol.en?cat-id=14529740

there are lots of options for schooling once you get here. You can work out the best plan once you have a visa. State school school entry is an option to consider, also if you go private then those schools often follow through so this is less of an issue as the transition is less relevant. Private have a couple of intake years, and many people stick with state primary and perhaps opt for private in secondary which largely depends on their catchment area etc. Things will fall into place nearer the times, and things do change so see what is best for you. Mine will start in Year 11 WA (having finished year 11 & completing GCSE's) and Year 7 WA, having just completed year 7 in the UK. Ages and year groups are slightly different, to get them in the corresponding age group with their peers, my understanding is that they have to start by term 3 around 20th July (semester 2) in order to continue in that year group. After this cut off date, they will be dropped a year as it is considered too much of a gap to chase. All the best :))

I have never heard of a child being dropped a year if they haven't started by term 3.

oh I'm surprised about this, I hope this is not the case as we arrive after 20th July and hope katie ( born 22 August 2004) won't be dropped a class just because of us arriving after this date ?!? X

Hi I really would not worry, we came out last July and all three of children did not start school until the Sept, James was 14 and in year 9, Tom aged 12 and went into year 7 for three months, before moving up to the high school and Emily 9 year 3, (Emily's birth year is Sept 2004).

Thanks SJT, think katie was a little worried to start with thinking she might be put with a 'younger' age group so hope this will be ok. Emily would have been in a lower class in uk to katie with having a sept bday but Think the same class out there as it's Xmas time cut of dates I heard.

I think it's just for those in year 11 as they'll have started their WACE, so Katie should be fine although being born in August she'll go into year 4 here not year 5.

That is not the case as all. I work as an educator here and the cut off date of June 30th is the only piece of information that will be relevant to you at this point. Being born before or after that date (in the year of entry) determines what grade/year a child is placed in.

We have many children starting throughout the school year and they are placed in their correct correct cohort regardless of if they arrive in February or November. It has absolutely nothing to do with what time of the year they arrive, that information is absolute rubbish and should be ignored!

Thanks Lou, yes I knew she'd be heading for year 4 and looked in to that for grades etc, so that's why I was abit worried to hear she might be dropped to year 3. But it's great to hear you are all quite sure that won't happen, and to hear from sammy below who has worked in education,xx

I agree as my daughter is going into year 11 that is why they said she had to start by term 3 to avoid being dropped. I think their view was its too much to expect to catch up on for WACE after this point. It could be a school policy perhaps, but although there is a comment about this being rubbish. We can each only go by our own experiences, and this was mine, which does make it valid :) The moral of the story I think is that its best to check with the preferred education provider :)
