donnachivers
Good Morning I have been recommended to this site by someone at Poms in Oz. It is myself, Donna aged 35, my partner Paul aged 41 and our dog, Bailey, an English Springer Spaniel aged 8 all moving from a small village in the South Wales Valleys, across to Perth on a 190 state sponsored visa. All family and friends have been told, most seem ok about it. Know they arent thrilled about me leaving, but most understand that its something I have wanted to do, and worked so hard for for the last 10 years, and so are generally supportive. Some people have fallen by the wayside once we have told them, one was a friend from Primary School. Generally we are excited. Did a HUGE house clear out yesterday, have generally thrown out or distributed all our belongings that we havent used in some time!! Have today booked Baileys pre flight bits and pieces with Petair. Hes had his Rabies shot, and also the blood test to say that the antibodies are all up and running. We are looking to come across Aug/Sept and looking for some advice/help/opinions. We have no preference to where we live, have looked at Rockingham, Hilaries, Quinns, Secret Harbour, Joondalup, Clarkson, Butler.....and so the list continues, but also need to get a holiday let for the initial few weeks. We want something close ish to the beach, nice walks for the pooch, whether thats dog parks, dog beaches or anything in between. Looking forward to hearing from you all about your experiences, what you have found to be helpful, sites you have used etc, and possibly meeting up with some of you in the next few months. Speak to you soon Donna, Paul & Bailey xxx

portlaunay
Welcome to PP. Probably the best thing for you to do would be to sit yourself down and have a read through previous threads. You'll find loads of useful information and many experiences from people who've walked in your shoes. Good luck with it all.
no1mum
Welcome Donna and Paul to the site, funnily enough I did not really use this forum much prior to our move, I have started to rely on it recently though, for shared experiences. People on here are very friendly and forthcoming with advice from their experiences, so hopefully it will help with those little questions which you may feel silly asking, but important to you, and you can be most peps wanted to ask those questions at some time in their journey. Re: holiday let, we stayed in one in Heathridge (near Joondalup) 5 min drive from a beach. We got the info from google sites of holiday lets, but if you want their direct details just let me know and I will pm you. The holiday let we used was for a min of 30 days lease, but she actually gives you a short term lease, which holds LOADS of credability with getting a longer lease as you have held one already/ referencing/ we got phone contract on day 2 etc, so although a little bit more money per week, stands you in good stead for any credit or reference applications on arrival. She also only takes 2 weeks bond money, whereby some places like 4 if short term rental and other holiday lets may not offer a lease document or reference. with regard to your location, you need to consider whether transport links important to you. The nearer the beach eg quinns, hillaries you have to rely on car or bus, whereas Joondalup, Heathridge you are closer to train stations. Rockingham is on transport links but being south of river, may be slightly less job opps ( (based on info from friends I have met here) South is generally cheaper to rent, but I always wonder if that is the reason why. good news is if you get holiday let you can stay NOR or SOR and then make an informed decision for longer term once you are here. Once you are here, be sure to tap into the socialising threads. We have made a few friends by just putting ourselves out there when opps allow, and only been here just over 3 months ourselves. good luck. Deb
Hi we are in Rockingham lovely beaches the one on the foreshore does not allow dogs you can take them on the prom.5/10 min walk further along dogs can go on the beach. It does make it harder to rent with a dog but not in possible.
verystormy
Hi Donna Welcome to pp. It was myself who recommended you pop along here. There is a thread that ran for a very long time that was started by someone at the same stage as you and whom is now here and settled so it might be a good read. Be aware it is a long one - over 800 responses, but lots of good information in it. It can be found here. http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/welcome-perth/12705-planning-move-many-questions-help.html You find us a friendly bunch and we are here to help. donnachivers
Thank you all for your help so far. I do know someone through a friend who lives in Rockingham, and to be honest, it was the house prices that have led us to keep looking there. We will have one car, but ideally would be using train/public transport if working in the city, so yeah transport links would be one of the most important things to us. Paul wants to go up the mines, so Ill be alone alot of the time, so somewhere that is safe, family/couple friendly is important, and if that means paying a bit more for housing, then so be it. The details of your holiday let would be great no1mum! will be nice to know that we have somewhere to go when we get off the plane From what I have seen there are loads of really friendly people on here, so thanks for the recommendation. verystormy
Hi Donna What does your husband do? The reason I ask is that there are very few occupations that are still in demand in mining - I am a unemployed miner (senior geologist). Mining in WA is currently in a significant downturn and a lot of people have been made redundant and a lot more are going to be - BHP this week announced up to another 3000. As a result, unless he has one of the few occupations that are still in demand then I would not assume he will be going there. On the plus side, I don't think it was ever a good plan for a family to do it when first arriving.
donnachivers
Hi Stormy, he doesnt really have a trade, but is open to doing anything, especially initially. As long as one or both of us has an income coming in pretty soon, we will both be happy!

Hopeful
Hi Donna we too have a bailey and are heading over end August. I assume it's the 180 days after rabies that's meaning your bailey can't fly till dec? The pet process is almost as complex as our visa was!! Will you leave him with someone or fly later yourselves? Hope you get sorted soon.
donnachivers
Ohhh how exciting. Our original date was the same as yours, but weve pushed it back so we get an extra month with Bailey here. Im hoping my dad will have him, ill have to ask him across the weekend. My mother has said she will, but hes a very strong dog and her partners waiting to go into hosp for back surgery, so they would struggle walking him! we cant leave going any later than Sept as our visa expired on Oct 9th
Guest Ozbadger
Hi Donna, welcome to Perth, or welcome shortly. You're coming at the best time of year to acclimatise, it feels very much like a British summer here at the moment. In terms of finding a holiday rental, short term rental that is reasonably centrally located to areas you are considering and very dog friendly I would consider Scarborough. Popular beachside suburb with great dog beaches just a little south of the main Scarborough beach (called Brighton beach on some signs). Scarborough has a lot of rentals and is certainly more modestly priced than the surrounding costal suburbs. one draw up with Scarborough is that you are a 10 minute bus journey from the train station. If you get a car soon after arriving Scarborough has great access to the rest of the coast, only 10kms south to Fremantle and 10kms north to Hillarys. hope this helps and best of luck with the move
