oysterbay
Hi my husbands Ielts are booked for 20Th September. He said he wont look into Vetasess until after. but I'm impatient and wondered if it would be possible to start the skills assessment process now. ? how long does it take to do. can you book the practical when it suits you or do they give you a date you need to do it? is there a lot of work involved for the assessment? it is for a HGV diesel motor mechanic . thanks
flatpack
Look at my timeline below for how long it can take. I'm a carpenter not a mechanic but I'd assume it's a similar process. The first part was an evidence gathering project and if you're relying on old companies to send you references then it can be frustrating. You can start the skills test process at any time, you don't have to wait until the IELTS is complete.
wild rose
The first part of the skill assessment is evidence based, collating work references, wage slips, relevant educational certificates, CV etc for all employers. Once you've submitted all that you wait for them to come back to confirm it has been successful. At that point you pay for the practical/technical interview (if one is required for your profession). We opted for a technical interview and then had to wait for them to allocate a time/date/location for it to take place. Then after that you wait for the final verdict! My time line may help too. Have you read the relevant Fact Sheet and info on the Vetassess website? And I'd also recommend doing a search on here and Pomsinoz.com to read of other peoples experiences and difficulties in doing it for your profession. Personally I would suggest at least making a start on getting the evidence together, as flatpack says sometimes getting references from somewhere when you left some time ago can be a challenge, but it's all personal preference. Maybe your fella doesn't want to feel under additional pressure when focussing on his IELTS? Maybe it could be something you could help with? My hubby sat the tests but I have done all the paperwork throughout, it worked well for us anyway. Good luck xx
oysterbay
thanks for your replies. yes i was hoping I could help him some how. I think I will let him focus on the IELTS and in the mean time check out the website and other peoples experiences. Thanks again for your help
jo and scott
hi oysterbay, my hubby scott has his hgv class 1 and also fixes trucks, he has completed the ielts test and is now getting the info together for the skills assessment, he has it all apart from 8 months worth of p60s, i really wished we had got the information together sooner as we are now waiting for the tax office to provide us with the p60 information we need. really annoying waiting !! it could take up to 40 days. not sure if you will need the same information as we do, we are getting the 189 visa. Hi Jo yes we are also trying to get the 189 . how far back do they require you to go for p60s and work references? Hubby has been at his current work place for 12 years , and a previous employment for 5years where he had done his apprenticeship . Is there any other information they require. is there a time limit on getting it together once you have paid and registered for the assessment ? do you do a practical and an interview. sorry for all the questions .... flatpack
Again I can only talk about carpentry but as it's a skilled visa I think it would be similar. As far as I can remember the maximum you can claim is 8 years experience out of the last 10. So if your hubby has been at the same place for the last 12 years your in easy street. P60's from the last 10 years, a letter from the company stating his role in the minutest detail and copies of his qualifications should nail it. I had to prove I had completed an approved apprenticeship which was a pain as the company closed in 1993 but if you can get a letter from that company too then you're laughing. wild rose
The work references should cover the entire time you're claiming for, or as Jo and Scott has said a Statutory Declaration can take the place of a reference if, for whatever reason, you're unable to obtain one. Are you claiming for 8 years work experience when applying for your visa? If so, all evidence needs to cover the entire period. If during the 8 years your OH has worked in different positions (albeit within the same company) I imagine the reference would have to include details for each position. It should be relatively straight forward with just 1 employer though. There is an example of a work reference on the Vetassess website which is well worth a look at, you have to include things like start date, hours worked, salary, tasks undertaken and tools used etc. We drafted our own references and asked my hubby's boss to put it on headed paper and sign it to ensure it covered everything we needed it to. For Joinery, after the evidence based part is completed you have the option of doing either a practical assessment or a technical interview. Although my hubby would have much preferred a practical there were none scheduled in this country so we had no choice but to do a technical interview (which is done via Skype). It turned out well in the end though and really wasn't anything to worry about.
