Amiio1
Just wanting to know if anyone has failed their skills assessment. My hubby is a bricklayer and had a skills assessment today in Manchester via Skype. We thought it would be a practical assessment seen as though he is a bricklayer but has come home feeling slightly deflated and worried he hasn't passed ? he said he had a 1 1/2 hour interview via Skype and was asked many questions about his job which was fine but then asked to explain things like how to build an arch. He said he got all muddled up and didn't really know how to answer this but if was told to do it and show them he could as this is his job to do so. He didn't think much of the int was relevant and is now worried he hasn't passed when he's done the job since leaving school and has run his own business for over 7 years with a positive custom. Anyone else had these thoughts after it? He was told he will receive an email in the next 10 days so it's just a waiting game now..... wild rose
My hubby is a joiner/carpenter and did the Skype interview for his skill assessment. When we got to that stage we had the option to pay for either a practical demonstration or a technical interview. Like you he wanted to to the practical but unfortunately there weren't any scheduled in this country so unless we wanted to wait we needed to do the Skype interview. He was in there a couple of hours but said that he wasn't asked anything unreasonable, it was relaxed and relevant and the bloke asking the questions was also a joiner. There was a question about explosive power tools that he was unable to answer so he just said so and it wasn't a problem. Did he do any preparation? There are Fact Sheets on the Vetassess website (assuming it was Vetassess you went through??). For example there was an information sheet specifically for the joinery technical interview which provided an outline of everything that needed to be covered. Plus we searched on here and Pomsinoz to give us an idea of everyone else's experience and overall he felt as prepared as he could be (and was nowhere near as nervous as he was for the IELTS!). If it's the job he has done for years I'm sure he'll be fine. Our impression is that they're not there trying to catch you out, just to make sure you're not blagging it! Although it stated 10 working days we had the results after 1 week so fingers crossed you won't have to wait too long xx
ImmilBees
I don't know for certain but in peoples signatures at the bottom, i'm sure i've seen things such as skills assessment failed first time, passed second time etc. Sorry I can't give a definite answer hopefully someone else can. x
Amiio1
Wild rose-Yes he read the prep thing on vetassess with bullet points what nay be asked. Yes I said that about catching you out but then on the other hand i think it maybe like a driving test where they can only pass so many. Anyone know if worse case senario if he will have to wait another 4 week and pay £800 again Just got him to read your reply and he said he hopes he's just being silly lol. Really hope he passes it. Fingers crossed!!! Edited July 17, 2014 by Amiio1

Fingers crossed!!! I'm don't think I've come across anyone at all who has failed the skill assessment at this stage. I've only seen it at the first stage where Vetassess has decided that their job isn't matched appropriately to the occupation applied for. It's more difficult to apply that to trades though. I think ImmiBees may be thinking of the IELTS which is often not passed first time. I'm sure the worse case scenario is that you get results confirming a fail and they recommend the gaps in his knowledge that need to be filled before he can apply for be reassessed, although I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay the £800 the cost of a reassessment is less. I imagine he is worrying unnecessarily, easily done when it's something that means so much to you and I imagine there is an additional pressure as it all rests on him! I'm sure they take into account the fact that some people are nervous etc. He's done it all of his working life - have faith!

flatpack
Amiio1, I'm pretty sure I know you! In fact I know that I know you and I hope you enjoy your day with Mrs Flatpack and the kids next Friday I'm also 99% certain Scott will have passed his skills assessment. Even if he hasn't, it isn't the end of the road, talking about how you'd complete a job isn't for everyone, he'd walk a practical exam and if he has to wait until a practical exam is available then so be it. Chin up and don't worry.

flatpack
Research, research, research Ammio1. There's loads of information on here and on poms in oz. I personally thought the listening and reading sections were quite easy as the answers are given to you, you just need to listen or read them and write them down. The speaking will be a breeze as he's a native English speaker. Writing seems to be most peoples downfall, spelling and grammar are both very important. If I remember correctly there is both a letter and an essay to write, both have a word count which is very important. The essay carries twice as many points as the letter so it's advised to complete that first (something I very nearly tripped up on) I found that by practising writing long hand with the correct punctuation from NOW, helped. No more "text" speak, all text messages wrote out in full with punctuation. Not using a spell checker when typing on the PC and then checking it afterwards all helped. Get into the habit of doing it correctly and then doing it becomes second nature making it less likely to make mistakes. There are loads of IELTS sites and plenty of practice material available both free and paid for. I went to the Harrogate Language College (they run the IELTS in Leeds) for an hours lesson (£50 ish) just to see what I was up against. Whilst they set my mind at ease, they told me nothing that I couldn't have got from here and other forums. Edit: You both know how much I can prattle on and the strange thing was I thought I'd make a hash of the speaking part. When they asked me to talk about a subject for 2 minutes, my mind went blank and my mouth dried up! 2 minutes felt like 6 or 7.
