Arash
Dear Friends, Me, my wife and 2 years old son are gonna fly to Australia in the January 2015. Can anyone help us know how much money we need for the first 6 months after arrival, including everything (rent, bills, food,...)? I would like to know an approximate range. Thank you guys. verystormy
In a nutshell as much as possible. You need enough to live for at LEAST 3 months with no other income. Ideally 6 months. Have a look on real-estate.com.au to get an idea of rental costs. But it is going to be at least $400 a week. Then there will be a bond of a months rent. Rentals here are by the week, so don't use 4 weeks per month. Gas elec, water are going to be about $100 a week. Food is very variable depending on the family, but I would allow at least $200 a week. You will need to buy a car - allow $3k for a cheap second hand (cars are expensive here) Then obviously fuel/ insurance / rego Allow for the fact that in the first month you will leach cash like water. But ultimately it will come down to how fast you can find a job. But it is best to budget as a pessimist than an optimist. On the plus side, if you are arriving as a permanent resident you may be eligible for some state assistance. But not having children I can't advise on this. nikkiwd
Hi, you will need to bring quite a lot! We spent $15000 in the first month (including a car and rent bond etc) and the approx normal monthly living costs are between $3800 and $4500. I will vouch for that, the rent is half of my take home pay & I'm one of the lucky ones that arrived with a job, it took my OH 8 months to get a job. Arash
Thank you friends for your comments. As far as, I have my job and income here in Kuala Lumpur, and from your SCARY comments (LOL), it seems that I need to find a job in Oz first and then arrive there. Until 17 April 2015, I must have first entry to Oz. Another option is I need to come to Oz before my wife and son to find a job and settle everything then call them to join me. Which option you think is better and helpful? Finding a job is only through online? or can be from other ways? Highly appreciated,
verystormy
Most people simply make the move and hope for the best. The problem with trying to find a job first is most employers won't touch you till you are here. My advice is you simply as a family bite the bullet and move. It is a risk. But that is the nature of moving countries.
Deb
Its a risk worth taking and like VS says bite the bullet bring your family and you will have each other for support.
