Guest Whistler05
Hi everyone, very new to this thread and hoping to get some help on some questions that are currently spinning around my head! Im a mechanic with 12 years experience in a main Ford dealership, was a senior technician and MOT tester there and for the last year I have been working at Landrover. Am hoping people who are over in perth can help answer some or all of my questions: what at salary might I be able to expect as a mechanic with my experience in WA? Would my salary be able to support myself and my family? My wife's a teacher but as our 2 children are under 6, ideally we would like her to stay at home with them but we know she may have to look into evening work to help out. ideally, I would like to get into the mines, how likely is it that I would be able to get a job in the mines with my qualifications and experience? Haven't got heavy diesel qualifications but I have heard from friends who have made the move that sometimes you can get heavy diesel jobs in the mines if you are a lightweight mechanic As you've got the knowledge and they just give u some extra training??! Would like to hear if this is something g that actually happens, Will be looking into getting my HGV license when I arrive and am budgeting for it. When we originally looked into emigration game few years ago, rentals seemed few and far between so wondered if that's still the case. We have family friends in Kinross and some garage contacts from people who have made the move but no one to actually stay with initially so getting accomodation sorted ASAP would be a priority. We are currently in 2 minds between WA and south aus, we both prefer WA landscape, there's just something about it that we both love, but equally we both liked SA when we were there and from what I can gauge from the different forums, SA seems cheaper, rent wise etc??! thanks everyone in advance. If anyone's able to give any opinion on y questions that would be great!
verystormy
I can't comment on salary, but you could have a look at seek.com.au to get some ideas. Getting work in mining is now very hard as mining is suffering a significant downturn and a lot of people have been made redundant. Mines, do employ mechanics for light vehicles as they have significant fleets of them. However, when vacancies come up, you would be competing against people with previous mine experience and for a lot of reasons mines prefer people with mining experience. The good news is rents have stabilized a lot and there are plenty of rentals available

I have looked on the job websites and although there seems to be lots of vacancies none of them seem to show the salary, just sometimes say "above award wages", thanks for the reply verystormy, ben
