Falcon. South Halls Head, Halls Head Primary School

Hi all

We are new to the forum, never used them before, so we are just after a little information about some primary schools please. We are flying on the 26th of November 2014, very exciting indeed, but at the same time very nervous about the move.

We will probably be renting in Port Bouvard, I think this is sorted now, we are looking at the schools in the title (F,SHH,HH) for our 8 year old and 4 year old boys.

also, I am a PE teacher (Currently Curriculum Leader of the Department) and will be seeking employment within the PE sector before we land if possible.

So any advice and guidance will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Port Bouvard is a beautiful place to live! Lucky you!

I've heard the primary at Halls Head is very good but unfortunately I don't know a lot about the school or the others you mention. I also understand that a lot parents place their children into private school for secondary (from year 7) because they don't like the secondary schools in Mandurah. There are lots of private schools in and around Mandurah.

Have a look at the government website and Better Education which have reviews of each school. You can also compare different schools.

Hi Lou

Thanks for replying, much appreciated. I have looked at both the government website and better education and they both say the three schools are very good, which is good news for us. In terms of the performance, SHH seems to be improving more than the other two, I was hoping thee may people on here that have children in all the schools. As for Port bouvard, I haven't a clue what its like, its just our friend has a house there we can use. Everyone seems to say its really quiet? Any thoughts?

Thanks lou

It will be quiet but it's all very new and there's lots of building work going on. There's a surf life saving school beach side and a couple of restaurants in Port Bouvard....one of them is a little gem of @Efie 's. It's also a great place to go dolphin spotting!

Hi and welcome to Perth Poms priz!

Before we moved over I had a look at these three schools and to be honest, I would have been happy with any of them, they all seemed pretty similar in what was on offer. We decided on South Halls Head and chose our rental accordingly to make sure we were in the catchment area. You will find that whichever catchment you live in, that's the school your kids will go to, simple as that, and you probably won't be able to enrol until you have proof of address. So the exact location of your friends house will determine which school your kids will go to.

Our eldest has just started his second term at South Halls head and our youngest will start kindy there next year and is so excited, she can't wait. So far impressions of the school are good, they have different teachers for PE, Japanese, art and music, and are currently doing a block of eight swimming lessons at the local swim school. There seems to be quite a strong focus on learning, the curriculum seems a lot more intense than what our son was doing back in England.

Feel free to PM me for more info.

We are just round the corner - opposite side of THe Cut.

There are a few bars restaurants in walking distance. The first is Hot Rock which is on the bank overlooking the channel. It will, I believe have a drinks terrace overlooking the water from summer where you can watch the dolphins jumping.

There is a restaurant and bar at the marina overlooking the boats you can dream about.

The Cut golf course has a bar and reasonable restaurant which is my local.

There is an Irish bar opposite your area which is fun and ok.

If you want to arrange a meet then pm me.

Loads to do. The stuff I have listed is just the ones in walking distance for you. Short trips get you to Mandurah city centre - the bus goes through Port Bouvard, so easy if you want to use that. There are several wineries in a short drive. Chocolate factory not far.

We like walking so head to the state forest often which is a short drive and in spring many people go and camp there and have fun in the river. We are also half way between Perth and Margaret River.

The beach in Dawesville is very popular in summer and is patrolled, has a surf club and surfing lessons run once a year.

Hi Priz - all three of the schools you mention are good, but personally I prefer Falcon PS purely because the Principal is so hands on and well respected by the whole school community.

As far as employment as a teacher goes, be aware that you will need to be registered with the Teachers Registration Board http://www.trbwa.gov.au and it can take a while for the registration process to be completed. May I suggest that if you haven't done so already, that you commence the registration process before you leave UK.

Hi

Thanks for the comments, that's great news about Falcon, what do you base your comments on for Falcon, what experience you have had in the past? My boys are very sport orientated, would you know if they play allot of sport at the school?

As for the TRBWA, I have started sent all documentation, that was about six weeks ago, they have been in touch saying they need references for the levels i have taught at, it is int a problem just most are on holidays now. even though they have all my qualification that I can teach at the levels. That's just ut it back a few weeks, never mind, I will say for anyone that reads the thread, you only have thirty days to complete the process once its started, I found this out a couple of days ago. Time is tight for me there.

cheers

Priz before I retired last year I was employed by the Department of Education in a senior HR role. I personally know all three schools and all three Principals.

As far as TRBWA are concerned, just let them know the issues you have with school holidays in UK..... term dates in WA are very different and most people here who have no link with UK do not understand that July and August are holiday months school wise. Good Luck with the registration though. Teacher recruitment in WA has undergone a massive change in the past 2 years and instead of being centrally placed through a computer system, the majority of positions are actually advertised and you apply direct to the school. Check out http://www.jobswa.gov.au. Also check out this thread http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/education/16294-job-applications.html. Sammy1 is right on the ball with her advice and is very knowledgeable in this area.

Good Luck!!

Hi thanks for the comment

I have registered with jobs wa and I have been seeing jobs come through, although the Phys ed ones have dried up now. I guess you still apply through jobs wa for the application to be submitted to the school?

I did read the thread on CV writing and covering letter. I think the best thing to do is try and get hold of some example ones that have been submitted. So if you anyone has a few that would be start.

Cheers

There is an oversupply of Phys Ed teachers in WA at the moment, but this will change when more of the baby boomer teachers retire in coming years. Whilst keeping an eye on jobswa, once you get here, it would be worth your while to visit schools you would like to work at, and deliver your Resume and ask to meet whoever books relief (supply) teachers. This can be a good route to a contract because if they like what you do when you perform relief, they will remember you when they have a short term contract.... from this route you can often get fulltime positions.

That may well be the way forward from what I can gather, a few people have mentioned that to me now. I'm just hoping the jobs pops up. Also, i have spoken to a member fr Melville High school ,very helpful indeed, they also mentioned about the baby boom retirement. I've set myself some goals, so fingers crossed these will be achieved within my timeline.

Hi Priz.

Just wanted to say hello, we are from Swinton so quite near you. We plan to fly out early next year, just waiting on the sale of our house. We did a visa activation trip in May and we really liked Mandurah and Halls Head in particular. We also have a four year old but we haven't looked into schools yet as he's only be going to kindergarten at this stage.

Also, my hubby is a teacher too, primary school though.

Will be nice to keep in touch. Good luck with everything!

Hi Cleowag

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay its been mad busy with organising everything to go.

Yes Swinton is near us, as for my four year old starting school, they have said he will start in February 2015, he is five in October.

We have also been looking at Falcon High School, not sure if you looked at that one?

They seem to be very helpful in replying to me and what is required for when we land.

The school applications for jobs are proving to be hard, they say will interview over sees teachers, but i've nothing yet, they have set format to follow called SAO, you have to get this sport on to be short listed.

Do you have a planned date for leaving?
