hi there-just an enquiry!

how far in advance do you need to register your child in a school. he is 4, will be 5 by the time we go (hopefully). i am planning for him to begin school in the Feb 2016 after the school holidays. and undecided as to if we should plan to arrive well in advance of this or if we can just arrive xmas 2015 and go from there.

any ideas

You can not apply before having a Rental Agreement or Mortgage or something to prove you live in the catchment area.

We arrive on the 20th November and have to get a rental sorted asap so we can get them enrolled in to school before they shut for the summer holidays. We have already contacted both schools and set up appointments in readiness so they can get the ball rolling asap.

I do hope to be corrected though, but this is what we have been told by both senior and junior schools.

We have did it a bit backwards. We knew the area we wanted to move to, then found the surrounding schools, then closed in a bit more on where we want to move. Once our flights were booked, we emailed the schools and explained what we were doing and they agreed it shouldnt be an issue to do it before the summer break.

sounds good, we not sure on area as will depend on jobs. i am just wondering if we arrive during the summer holidays will we be able to enrol him in their first week back or will it take longer. just dont want him starting alone when all the other kids have been there a few weeks.

tricky !

We set our deadline for December 2014, before they close. If it was after our eldest would start after everyone else. As he would start year 8 (new school) at the same time as everyone else.

That said, I read on here the other day that all the schools are used to new people starting each week and accommodate them very well.

yes i think i have seen that somewhere too. i would feel bad for him if he started after the others. i just hope all can be organised by then, so much to do but its such a slow process.

Exactly our thoughts. We wanted Jack to start the new school when all the others start the school, so they can all be just as lost as each other. Im sure it will work out just fine for everyone.

If he is five by June 30 2015 then he will be starting in February 2015 in pre-primary.

I wouldn't stress too much about getting here before the holidays start, you will probably find that the admin staff go back to school a day or two before the kids, which means you can go and enrol the day before kids go back and he can start the next day alongside everyone else. The bonus of this is the school is nice and quiet and the admin staff actually have the time to deal with you without being pestered by kids and other parents, this is what we did after the Easter holidays when we arrived this year.

The most important thing, like others have said, is that you need proof of address before you can enrol (unless you're going private).

Good luck with the move!

ETA: just noticed I'm a year out with my timings for you, add a year :)
