Hi Everyone,

Just had a HR person contact me to ask if i would be interested in role on Barrow.

The usual.. rubbish roster 26/9 ( not very keen on that) but the potential deal killer is this "shared accommodation"

does anyone have any experience of it.. is it as bad as it sounds or.. you can live with it..

they are going to pay me $125/day extra because of it.. but honestly.. for my own room.. I’d rather not have the $125

Anyway.. its only until mid next year.. so maybe 9 months by the time i go through the recruiting process

thanks for any insights

hense my asking the question...everything is do able at a push.. but ...sharing a room.. at my age... no chance.. unless she is perky and 25.. then no doubt there will be a new thread on Perthpoms about having to share a room with a far to friendly old man..!

Not trying to be daft but did the HR say shared accommodation or did they specify that its room share. the outlook is ...usually shared accommodation is house share... with your own room... or room share could be one of u are on nights and one of you on days.... doing swopsie with the bed ...eeww... at least it would be warm hahaha.... or two beds in a room.... and on top of that l would be cautious if its agency approaching you as u r contracted to them not who is running Burrow which means easy come easy go with the work. 26/9 is also the worse shift possible but if you want to get on the ladder of mining you could just bite the bullet for that time. You never know they might be 25... not so sure about the perky area lol.

My OH works there and has done the room share. Its against a nightshift worker who you never see they never overlap. He got paid $500 per week extra to do it though so not sure what company you are with but that's high. He's on single now and much prefers it even with the drop. He's been there since Feb and we are managing OK The money is amazing so it . He plays soccer goes to the Gym and they have a few pubs.Oh and no swapsie bed for goodness sake,! There are two beds one clearly marked for you one clearly marked for the other! 26/9 is not the worst 4/1 is I reckon, and its not mining no underground work.

Its not an agency... its the companies HR department..

re the accomodation this is what i got in an email followup

Dual Occupancy (whilst no guaranteed) refers to employees sharing a room with a colleague, who is of the same sex and on the opposite shift. Employees are remunerated at $125.00 per night of Dual Occupancy.

So $875 a week... but thats going to be taxed to hell.. as the package is over the $180k mark.. i know.. boo hoo.. but if i am going to have to put up with a "roomee" then i hate having to give half of it away to tax..! And its only about 50K more than i get ow.. and i'm on a sweet 10/4 swing

And yes.. this isnt mining, its construction Oil and Gas.. which i have worked resources construction for years now.. but not in Oil and Gas.

So the money.. and the new sector make it tempting..

ah well... i guess i will wait and see what is offered

My son has been FIFO in mining for quite a few years and to start with he had this situation. He hated it as he never felt relaxed when he was in the room even though his "roomie" was on shift and they never met......and after some of his belongings started to "disappear", he decided it wasn't for him. Not saying that everyone has light fingers, but I guess the fact that if the space you have as "down time" is shared, you will never totally have "down time".

yeah... they apparently provide you with a locker.. which is almost like you have to pack your bag every morning to put valuable stuff away.. and a change of clothes to that you dont disturb the roomee if you come back as he is leaving etc..

to be honest.. i'm not that keen...

I wouldn't be either... neither was my son... not worth the money... unless you know you are sharing with a very good mate maybe!

You are not guaranteed it and to be honest there are a queue of blokes wanting to do it as they want the extra money. You have to agree to it or they won't let you on the island. My OH has been in there two swings out of 6.He's had no issues as such but obviously prefers the single rooms. Some people though think what the heck I'm here to earn as much money as possible .

sounds like it might not be as big of an issue as i initially thought.. 2 out of 6 isnt that bad...

I dont know how much longer is left for Barrow... they have said the role is intially to the middle of next year... so i might only get about 9 swings out of it before its over

onwards and upwards... lets see if anyone wants more of a chat from the company before i start spending the money..!

I think it depends on what you do. OH was originally up there until May company has now signed for another two years and are about to sign an ongoing maintenance contract.
