Lee Thorp
Hi all Some friends of mine have recently returned from a holiday in Sydney and they mentioned that they never saw any kids playing out.Is it like this in Perth?do kids play football in the park or ride on their bikes/scooters? I know this sounds a strange question but I just wanted to know as I want my kids to make the most of the outside rather than sitting in front of the TV playing xbox like they do here in the UK
verystormy
This has come up before and different members report different observations. I, personally never see kids out playing. Think kids are the same in both countries and these days like to sit in front of the tv / computer.
SJT
Back in the UK, my children never went out, the eldest one had a bad experience at a local park with some friends who then turned on him, so after that none of them really to go out. Here they go all the time, admittedly not during the very hot summer days, they tend to go out later in the evening, but I struggle to keep mine in, I have a 15, 13 and 10 year old, and the two older ones even take their younger sister to the park to play tennis etc. During the last half term I hardly saw the two older ones. It helps that we do not have a garden of any sort, only a small area with a table and chairs, so they have to go out to play football/tennis/cricket. Everyday after school the kids play in the school field and on the equipment and parents take snacks and drinks and sit and watch them. Obviously when they first get here they will not know many people so it will take them a while. We have been here a year now, and the kids social life is more hectic than ours, for the next four weekends we are full of stuff to do for the kids. Nutnudger
I think it partly depends were you live, we live in the hills and see kids out and about off to the park or shops, admittedly it's not the same tho as when I was growing up in the UK we have a 3 and 7 year olds and they love to ride there bikes around the cul-de-sac we live in

ali
I think it depends on where you live, ages, time of year etc., - if there's other kids in the street. My boy used to be playing in the street a lot - or else my garden would be full of kids or they'd be at someone else's. Now at almost 15 they tend to go to Burger King for a frozen coke on the way home from school and then play basket ball for a couple of hours. He also trains for soccer twice a week and plays on Sundays. There's a lot of organised sport here in WA - look around the sporting fields at weekends and you'll see AFL, Rugby, Soccer, Hockey - my daughters friend plays Lacrosse - summer will bring soft ball and cricket. Deb
We have a park opposite and there is allways kids playing even yesterday when it was windy. It depends on the kid my 6 year old granddaughter allways wants to play in the street the one who is 9 she just wants to read. They are still in England but if we had a pool then the 9 year old be in it all the time. Lou8670
My three play out. When we first arrived we were staying with family and their house backs into a park. Now we live in a cul-de-sac they play outside in the street. We're lucky enough that all the houses in our street have kids the same age. It's now hard to keep them inside to do their homework!!! portlaunay
My 11 year old makes his own way to and from school on the bus and will ride or bus into town or the skate park. Both of them play out on the street in front of the house. My daughter is only 7 so I wouldn't be happy about her going any further without an adult. At weekends we give our son $10 and he does his own thing. Most of the time he drifts into town, bumps into friends, hangs out and we'll get calls and texts from people we know who'll let us know they've seen him in town and he's okay. We do the same for their kids; we see them in the park and just send a text saying "just seen xxx in Freo and he's fine"
