GingerDog
Hi, I've been offered a 457 visa to work in Perth for a year. I'm keen on the move but my wife worries that the salary is not enough to enjoy our current lifestyle. The job offers around $100,000 and we have two kids, one boy, 11 and one girl,8. This will be our sole income, would we struggle on this kind of salary or is this a good wage over there. thanks in advance of any replies. Weedolly
Depends on where you live, amount of rent etc, you can get a rental for $400 or $700 or anything inbetween, depends on what suburb! we managed on less for a while for a family of 3 but there was not a lot of treats or savings! You have to remember though on a 457 there is no benefits like child care rebate, and you will have school fees to pay from beginning of next year. Lou8670
It really depends on your current lifestyle and how you live when you arrive here. $100k is enough to live on. Many live on a lot less. A police officer for example would be on about $75k to give you an idea and they feel they are much better paid then in the UK. Some things are more expensive, some less and some the same. I think the average salary is about $60k.
Guest Guest6235
All depends on your lifestyle. If it's only for a year you may as well treat it as a life experience, surely you can budget for this amount of time. Everyone is different in what they see as necessities in their monthly outgoings like meals out or alcohol in the weekly/monthly shop, I'm actually really surprised at how many people factor in alcohol into their outgoings. I'm sure if you can afford the basics then build from there you will be fine. I know of a family who've been out since May last year and they are loving it in Perth on a salary less than yours. GingerDog
Thanks for the replies, we have been looking at suburbs south of the city like Baldivis, Secret Harbour and as far south as Mandurah. We don't live an affluent life but we would still like to be able to eat out a few times a month without worrying about money. Thanks again. Rentals are much cheaper where you want to go, so $100k should be a comfortable life, but certainly no frills with a wife & kids,
Plimthing
I guess when your employers parent company announces $2billion losses any salary is good!
verystormy
Divide it by 2.5 and that will give an estimate of what it equates to in the UK in GBP. So it isnlike living in the UK on £40k.
7cdb
We are very lucky in the UK as I earn a few quid. The mrs doesn't have to work and she brings up the little one instead We really should be mortgage free, but we are far from it! We have spent all our money on travel and cars. I have a good trade so whatever we take over with us we are prepared to "lose" if things dont work out. I really am sick of the work life balance here in the UK. The only way somebody can get on and earn a decent living is by giving up something else........life. My work is my life and I am sick of it. I want to work to live not live to work! I was bought up with nothing now we have lots. Not worth nothing if all you do is work. Start at 6 finish at 4 Mon-Fri that will do me. School the little one and enjoy our time together as a family that is worth a lot more than a fat pay cheque. It's taken me a long long time to realise that happiness is not a couple of nice cars and a large house. Happiness is spending time with your loved ones laughing and enjoying them. Guest Guest6235
By the sounds of it mate I don't think the work/life balance for some is much better in oz, but at least if you're not working on a weekend you will have plenty to do with the family without having to worry if it will rain. What pi**es us off where we live in uk is that if you work all week then come the weekend we struggle for things to do and when we do go somewhere we worry if it will rain or not. People work just as hard in Australia! I used to watch that Wanted Down Under programme and be amazed at the number of people moving to Australia to get the better work/life balance (plus the big house with a pool!).... All I hear is how expensive it all is, and more families needing two incomes to get by...
Nikkis2000
We're managing on one salary more or less. OH works but because he runs his own business actual income can be sporadic. We run the household budget entirely based on my income, which isn't far different to Gingerdog's, and anything OH brings in is saved. We don't live extravagantly but we eat well, always have a supply of wine/beer and go out once or twice a month. I don't work in the city, work reasonable hours (8-4) and we run two cars. Having said all that, we don't have kids or schools to worry about which I would imagine is what takes up a good percentage of the monthly budget! realitynotincluded
Hi there. If your missus is anything like me l like the hard facts on cash lol.... Lets just say you earn that flat $100,000 a year and it does not include your superannuation which currently is 9.5% The break down after tax annually $73,053,00..... if you are lucky enough to get paid weekly $1,404,08... fortnightly $2,808,15 or the grand monthly pay check will bring in $6,084,33... l would make sure with your employer that $100,000 does not included your super as it can be the difference of monthly $ 6,084,33 to getting $5,643,35... which would make your annual take home after tax $67,760,72, ...anyway hope this helps about income. Like many are saying from next year 457 visa are going to have to cough up for school fees....this is per family...not per child as is rumoured... from what l can gather it is $4,000 per year... that does not included the fact you have supply everything from stationery, the books, uniform, and with your boy going to high school you pay for each subject he will be doing... but these figures are just to try and give you a basic picture....lots of people live on less and are happy...
